Who are you writing to, and why do you still write?

It sounds like a simple question, yet most participants take more than a single sheet of paper to answer it.

Yesterday at @rentakmalaysiaku_gmbb , we welcomed individuals, pairs of friends, small groups, and families who joined our writing circle.

Moving beyond a quick note on the go, the writing circle invites a gentler, more deliberate pace for letters. By stepping away and sitting down together at the tables, participants gave themselves a quiet pause—allowing the time and focus needed to truly turn inward and converse with themselves.

Regardless of length, format, or the absence of words, every contribution finds its place. All collected letters will be compiled into a book (non-profit, not for sale) printed in limited copies, available exclusively for on-site reading during the In Other Words exhibition in November, at GMBB!

We heard your questions about our upcoming writing circle, and here's what you should know!

This writing circle leads up to an exhibition called "In Other Words", where 31 letters will be selected as prompts for artists to respond with their artwork. The 31 best-suited artworks will be selected to be exhibited alongside the 31 letters.
.
This event is in conjunction with GMBB's @rentakmalaysiaku_gmbb 🤍 so expect a busy crowd! We recommend taking public transport (mask up!) or carpooling to GMBB.
.
Letters not selected for the exhibition will still be featured, but in a different medium - a book! Info is in the second slide above.

We recommend:
Bringing a camping chair (no tables at the venue, picnic-style)
Being friendly 🤍

We're hosting an open discussion about local space activation with @primaryexhibitions on 16 September! (Malaysia Day, Wednesday public holiday)

Finding the right space for a project is a shared hurdle for many of us. We're hosting an open discussion to hear how different practitioners approach this, and to talk about the ongoing challenges of finding room for our work.

The hope is to share knowledge on how we might rethink alternative or underutilized spaces. It’s also just a time to talk about unrealized projects, share works in progress, and see how we can offer support to one another's practices.

If you're an independent curator, designer, producer, or exhibition maker, we'd love to have you join the conversation.

Our first event! We're bringing our network together in a two day reading room, alongside an open discussion on 16 Sep, to build the conversation around alternative/underutilised spaces, public knowledge, and creating a supportive space to talk about works in construction.

📕💭 The pop up reading room, also called an 𝙄𝙙𝙚𝙖 𝙇𝙞𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙮, is open to the public from 15-16 Sep 2026 (Malaysia Day Public Holiday), from 11.00am to 8.00pm!

This time round, we're showing books and creative publications related to exhibition management, curatorial practices, space design, and the broader field of the arts.
