Horror is like hip hop. There’s a freedom in the form unlike any other genre. Anything goes as long as it serves the root purpose.
A Quiet Place peaks at 23%. Hereditary explodes at 97%. Two completely different structural choices. Both terrifying. Both work.
The constant isn’t where the tension peaks. It’s that it never really lets go. by @thescriptgraph

Tarantino is one of the first directors who made me aware of structure.
Pulp Fiction isn't told chronologically. He reorganized the timeline to control when you feel tension, not to tell the story in order. The chronology is secondary. The emotional rhythm is everything.
What the graph shows is that he was already doing this in True Romance. Nearly identical tension patterns, two films apart.
He may have cracked his own code before most people knew he had one. by @thescriptgraph

GENRE AS TROJAN HORSE
2025 Oscar Winner — Best Original Screenplay
Sinners disguises itself as horror. What Coogler is actually doing — tracing the roots of American music, the theft of Black culture — takes nearly 40% of the script to build. The prologue earns that patience. You already know something terrible is coming. So the wait feels like dread, not drag. by @thescriptgraph

For better or worse I learn about what life is by watching movies. Eternal Sunshine is one of those. Devastatingly beautiful. Uses whimsy to tell a story that cuts deep. Casting a comedian as Joel was a choice I still think about. It’s a film I aspire toward and quietly accept I’ll never make anything close to. by @thescriptgraph
