True story.

I got kicked out of sewing school when I was 12 years old because I missed too many Saturday classes.

To be fair, waking up early on a Saturday felt unreasonable at the time. 😂

Thankfully, that wasn’t the end of my sewing journey.

I kept sewing, kept learning, kept creating, and kept believing in myself.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that other people don’t get to decide what’s possible for you... not a teacher, school, boss, or critic.

Count yourself in when others count you out.

You might surprise everyone.

Including yourself. 💗 taken in The SEWcial Café by @thesewcialcafe

Let’s talk about the seam ripper. Some people love it. Some people hate it. But one thing we all have in common is that we have to use it. 😂

We think the seam ripper gets a bad reputation because people associate it with making mistakes. But having to take out a seam doesn’t mean you’re bad at sewing. Sometimes you sew something backward, sometimes the pieces don’t line up, and sometimes you just decide you don’t like the way something looks. Even people who’ve been sewing for decades still reach for their seam rippers. It’s part of the sewing process, and there’s no reason to feel embarrassed about using one. Around here, we say practice makes better. And sometimes getting better involves taking a few stitches out and trying again.

So, let’s hear it. What’s your relationship with your seam ripper? Love it, hate it, or have you made peace with it? 😂 by @thesewcialcafe

What started off as a pair of jeans and some ribbon quickly turned into this beautiful tote bag! And can we talk about those sunflowers? 🌻 Doesn’t this bag just make you happy? How can you look at those sunflowers and not smile?

We love seeing what people create with things they already have!

If you enjoy projects like this, join us for our Thrift Flip Workshop on November 6th and 13th! Everyone will work on their own project, so no two projects will be the same. From bags to dresses, skirts, pants, or whatever you have in mind, you get to decide what you want to create!

When you’re sitting at the sewing machine, paying attention to your seam allowance, guiding your fabric, controlling your speed, and making sure you’re sewing in the right direction, there’s a lot happening in your brain. And sometimes, you’re concentrating so hard on what you’re doing that you don’t have much mental space left to think about everything else going on in your life.

We think that’s one of the reasons sewing can feel so therapeutic. For a little while, your attention is on something you’re creating with your own hands instead of the things that have been worrying you. Those problems don’t necessarily disappear, but getting a break from thinking about them can feel really good. And sometimes, having a hobby that gives your mind something else to focus on is exactly what you need.

Has sewing been therapeutic for you? taken in The SEWcial Café by @thesewcialcafe

Fun sewing fact: Pressing as you sew helps shape your garment.

Heat, moisture, and pressure can help relax and reshape fibers, which is why pressing a seam after you sew it helps the seam lie flatter and gives you a better foundation for whatever you’re sewing next. And pressing and ironing are not quite the same thing. With pressing, we generally lift the iron and place it down instead of moving it back and forth across the fabric. That helps reduce the chance of stretching or distorting your fabric.

This is why “press as you sew” is one of the rules at The SEWcial Café. Although, I’m using the word rule loosely. Nobody is going to put you out for skipping the iron. But I will probably notice. And eventually, you’ll notice too, because those little trips to the ironing station really do make a difference in how your finished garment comes together.

So if you’ve ever wondered why sewists spend almost as much time at the ironing board as they do at the sewing machine, now you know. taken in The SEWcial Café by @thesewcialcafe

On this day eight years ago, we opened the doors to the very first SEWcial Café in Philadelphia.

When I think about that day, I think about the women who stood beside me and helped turn an idea into something real. The original vision was to create a supportive space where women could sew together and serve as an incubator for women who wanted to build small businesses using the craft of sewing. But The SEWcial Café became so much more. It became a community. That’s why you won’t hear me say I built this. I couldn’t have done it alone. My day-one members will always have a special place in my heart. If you were at the Frederick grand opening, you already know what happened when some of them showed up unexpectedly. I cried my eyeballs out 😂

When I brought The SEWcial Café to Frederick, I didn’t know if we could create that same sense of community here. But God has continued to show me that this space is needed. The people who come through our doors aren’t just my students anymore. They’ve become my sewing friends, my community, and some have even become my closest friends.

And if The SEWcial Café looks like an overnight success in Maryland, I can assure you it has been a very long night 😂 What you see today is the culmination of successes, failures, a COVID-19 closure, depression, learning, a hard-earned Ph.D., business masterminds and accelerators, doubt, prayers, and a whole lot of gratitude.

So today, eight years later, I just want to say thank you. If you’ve taken a class, referred a friend, shared a post, attended an event, or simply stopped by to say hello, you’ve been part of this story.

Eight years later, we’re still here. Still sewing, still learning, and still building community. And I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who has been part of it💗 taken in The SEWcial Café by @thesewcialcafe

Wow! What an honor 💕

This week is Business Appreciation Week in Frederick County, and we had some special visitors stop by The SEWcial Café to present us with a certificate recognizing our impact and commitment to the community.

When I opened The SEWcial Café, I wanted to create a space where women could come together, learn, create, and feel comfortable being exactly where they are in their sewing. So, to be recognized for the impact we’re making in the Frederick community really means a lot.

Thank you to the Frederick County Office of Economic Development, Downtown Frederick Partnership, Kiki Wilson, Megan Connolly, and Ashley Reed for stopping by and for this recognition. We’re honored to be part of the Frederick community and to continue creating a safe, welcoming space for women to create. #fredcobaw2026 taken in The SEWcial Café by @thesewcialcafe

Hey Friends! Our October Foundations of Sewing Workshop is the LAST beginner workshop we’re offering in 2026. If learning how to sew has been something you’ve wanted to do this year, don’t wait on this one. We start Thursday, October 8, and meet Thursday evenings from 6-8pm through October 29. We’ll start with the basics and help you get comfortable using your sewing machine while learning the foundational skills you’ll need to keep sewing and move on to more advanced projects.

After October, our remaining workshops for the year will be for our Level 2 and Level 3 sewists, so there won’t be another Foundations workshop until next year. Registration is open now, and spots are limited. Visit our website and reserve your seat before this final beginner workshop fills up. We’d love to have you sewing with us. taken in The SEWcial Café by @thesewcialcafe
