Autumn at the Oregon Coast is an absolute banger.

The beaches are emptier. That golden light is definitely showing off, and the wind understood the instructions. Everything looks like a scene from a movie you wish you could live inside.

So summer? You can keep your crowds.

Give me October, a little salt in the air, a dress that catches the breeze, and two people wildly in love.

The Oregon Coast in autumn is her main character moment. And I fully support her.

A little golden-hour magic from Cannon Beach, Oregon. ✨

Sometimes childhood looks like bare feet and wildflowers.

Sometimes it looks like silent children standing in a sunlit garden dressed as serial killers.

Nothing to see here and certainly no reason to check the missing person reports.

We all want timeless childhood photographs.

Technically, Michael Myers is timeless. taken in Vancouver, Washington by @thesewildlings

The feminine urge to walk directly into the fog and return three business days later with several secrets, a working knowledge of native herbs and tinctures, and absolutely NOT putting a hex on anyone.

Portland in the fall, but make it a movie.

No golden field required. Or mountain overlook. No pretending your children are deeply moved by the majesty of nature.

Just wandering city blocks, letting folks do what they do best: simply be.

It’s always a treat to photograph families in places bustling with life and errands and photo bombers.

Because your family doesn’t need a beautiful backdrop to make beautiful photographs.

There are versions of a woman that belong only to herself.

Not a mother. Not a wife. Not a daughter. Not whatever the world tells her she should be today.

Just woman.

Wild-haired. Soft. Strange. Powerful.
Taking up the space she deserves to fill beneath the misty, gray ocean skies.

Maybe that’s what I love about the Oregon Coast. Everything here is allowed to be a little unruly. The wind. The sea. The weather. Us.

An for the art. Obviously.

How to be good at fall:

Find the biggest leaf.
Obviously keep it.
Find another leaf.
Also keep that one.
Hold hands but don’t drop the leaves.
Hide behind the leaves so no one can see you.
Collect another leaf.
Throw it.
Put them in the car seat when you’re done.🍂

Honestly, kids are very good at fall. And we should slow down and learn from them.

You really don’t need the perfect foliage or the perfect outfit or the perfect smiles. You just need a trail, a pocket for treasures, and approximately 847 leaves that are obviously very different from the other leaves.

Fall family photos in Vancouver, WA are in their golden, crunchy, tiny-treasure-collecting era. And it’s gonna be so, so good.

One red corduroy dress.
Two teeny pigtails.
Three stems of wildflowers.

Your reminder fall photos do not require a pumpkin patch or a grove of colorful trees. While you may not have “the back of my kids’ head on your photo list, wouldn’t you say it’s something worth remembering?

Fall sessions around Vancouver, Washington are officially doing their thang…and I am once again asking everyone to please bring me your children and their ridiculous little details. 🍂 I promise we’ll pull some shenanigans.

The county fair.
Sticky hands. Farm animals. Carnival rides held together by what I can only assume is hope.

They’re a little bit older. Walking a little ahead of me now.
Laughing at jokes that belong only to them.

Not that any of this day was important, but also somehow all of it was.

If I’m going to pay $47 for two lemonades then I want photos to remember it by.

Childhood is doing that rude thing that just refuses to slow down. And it hurts me. But also makes me smile. taken in Vancouver, Washington by @thesewildlings

We could call this “Love in the mist”
Or “Fall-ing in love”
Or “When the clouds are fire”

They definitely have infinite aura.

The moral of the story is family is worth documenting no matter what yours looks like.

Childhood adventures you can almost smell.

Being a parent is strange that way. While you’re living it, childhood feels endless. Then one day you realize there was a last time they needed help reaching the good apple. The last time you could pick them up.

Absolutely nobody tells you when the last time is going to be.

So take the photos. Take them on your phone. Take them on your camera. Hire someone to take them for you. Just don’t forget TO TAKE THEM.

A little September magic in the orchards of Hood River, Oregon. 🍎

If you’ve been thinking about family photos in Hood River this fall, consider this your sign to make a day of it. Pick some apples. Let the kids get dirty. I’ll worry about the photographs. taken in Hood River, Oregon by @thesewildlings

Turns out, the magic doesn’t stop when they get too big to carry.

It’s still there, it just looks a little different. You wanted to maybe kill them on the car ride over because they wouldn’t get off their phones, were pummeling each other in the backseat, couldn’t agree on The Architects or Zara Larson…and also ice cream probably doesn’t work as a bribe anymore. It is also a fact that someone DID NOT want to come.

But then you get them out on the Oregon coast…with its salty air and immense size. They ditch their shoes, and they remember that shells are treasures. They taunt each other, and make their mom laugh…….

AND THERE IT IS.

Your family.
Right now.

Whether or not you can admit it now, you’ll miss this version of them too when it’s passed.

So yes. Book the photos with your teenagers. Even if they complain the entire drive there. Especially then. 🤍 taken in Oregon Coast by @thesewildlings
