Hi! The Shared Nightstand is a space for sharing interests and being reminded that a lot of what we’re navigating is shared, even when it doesn’t feel that way :) Edit: Alexa forgot to add in the first t in Nightstand but has since corrected the logo… oopsies by @thesharednightstand
A peek at Rachida’s nightstand 🛌 Anxiety has taught me the value of clarity. My bedside table stays intentionally minimal, anything more and I can’t sleep. I always return to The Jakarta Method by Vincent Bevins, the book that sparked my friendship with my nightstand companion, Alexa. The fleur d’oranger home scent brings me back to France, the idea of home. The bird represents my first and most essential value: freedom, no limitations. The print is from the very first collection of Rama Publishing, my brand, featuring a Rumi quote. The small vase nods to Greek mythology, a fascination I have had since I was thirteen. In that sense, my bedside table is home. by @thesharednightstand
Books ↔ Things [Insert monkey sees action neuron activation meme] 1. Telfar ↔ The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams 2. Industry ↔ The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe 3. Marvin’s Room ↔ Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë (the concept of the Brontë sisters ghostwriting Take Care…) 4. The Plimsoll burger ↔ The Second Bakery Attack by Haruki Murakami #sesquipedalian by @thesharednightstand
A peek at Alexa’s nightstand 🛌 Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman is my current companion while I’m working on a knowledge management case study and trying to stop overthinking. Kahneman’s line “what you see is all there is” has been stuck in my head, because when knowledge isn’t visible and easy to find, we decide based on whatever’s right in front of us, and and this is an important insight to build into how we design systems. Nothing in life is as important as you think it is while you are thinking about it! Song of the day: Something To Me by Josh Baker lol mentally frat flicking in the office 👆🫳 by @thesharednightstand
Bello! I’ve been moving between Perfection and Bad Behavior this past week. As a recent grad who’s mostly been trying to brush up on LLM knowledge for work, these reads have been refreshing and oddly comforting. One story in Bad Behavior made me giggle on the tube because it mirrored a recent experience almost word for word. Someone said to me exactly what a character says in the story, and that page is now dog-eared as a physical marker of my 2025 #unc lore. It made the whole thing feel lighter and I get to laugh about it now. I’ve also learned that I need proper bookmarks. I love using letters and postcards from friends, but I have to get better at taking care of my belongings because I lost a photo strip and a note I really loved somewhere on the Victoria line. Bruh. Song of the day: Jennah’s Interlude by Blue Iverson, one of Dean Blunt’s side projects! — Alexa by @thesharednightstand
I got this book from my favourite bookshop in London, Bookmarks in Bloomsbury. The bookshop was located near my old university. The author makes a clear connection between the violence against Palestinians and the wider destruction of land, life and any sense of a future. One of the strongest parts of the book is how it refuses to treat Palestine as a one-off tragedy. Instead, it places it within a much larger global system built on extraction, erasure and treating people as disposable. The book isn’t trying to make you feel sorry, it’s asking you to take responsibility. By the end, it becomes almost impossible to separate environmental collapse from political violence. Silence is not an option. — Rachida by @thesharednightstand
We hope you’ve had a great start to the new year. Here are some reflections from us. Feel free to share yours! 🍻🌟 by @thesharednightstand
This week, we celebrated Christmas together 🙂‍↕️🎄 Alexa started Bad Behavior by Mary Gaitskill, a sharp short story collection about desire, power, and alienation, written with an insistence on sitting with what’s unresolved. Rachida picked The Destruction of Palestine Is the Destruction of the Earth by Andreas Malm, which she picked up from the Bookmarks Bookshop stand at an event at Union Chapel in Angel, where Mahmoud Muna, owner of the Educational Bookshop in occupied East Jerusalem, spoke. Tucked away in Bloomsbury, Bookmarks Bookshop (@bookmarksthesocialistbookshop) has been around since the early ’70s. The official bookseller for the UK’s largest union body, it carries everything from Palestine and feminist writing to fiction that sparks action. #london #books #bookshop #islington #cafes by @thesharednightstand
Book reflection 📖 Work Won’t Love You Back: How Devotion to Our Jobs Keeps Us Exploited, Exhausted, and Alone by Sarah Jaffe This book is a must-read. I know that in today’s fast-paced society the size of this book can feel daunting, but it’s a page-turner and I finished it in no time. Jaffe has a real gift for explaining complex ideas in a relatable way, while still delivering an uncomfortable electric shock of truth. I genuinely couldn’t put it down. She dismantles the myth of “work you love” and argues convincingly that a capitalist society will make you blur the lines between labour and love. When we develop emotional attachments to our work, our bosses can end up extracting every last drop of energy and joy from us. Jaffe is a former staff writer at In These Times and her background shows. She writes incisively about labour, protest movements, and grassroots organising. This book isn’t arguing that we shouldn’t love our jobs it’s a call to action against exploitation and the emotional manipulation baked into big employer rhetoric. Instead of searching for fulfilment at work, we need to find love and purpose in our communities: getting to know our neighbours, rebuilding community centres, and strengthening the one thing we already have but often overlook each other. — Rachida #book #bookreview #books #london #corporate by @thesharednightstand

We believe that the right books will always find you. Sometimes it’s the cover, sometimes it’s one line, but something resonates. Here are a few that found us. Let us know if one finds you too 🌟 Rachida: Mother Mary Comes To Me by Arundhati Roy (slide 1). It reminded me of how layered and complex our relationships with our mothers can be. Alexa: The Waiter by Kwan Ann Tan (slide 6). I found it the week I started a new job in London. It’s a choice-driven dystopian story about navigating the city and trying not to lose yourself, which felt very on the nose. by @thesharednightstand
