What happens when students stop learning from textbooks and start building something real?

Welcome to The Switch Lab™ – a 1-week workshop being pioneered by @switchvehicles to give participants hands-on experience building a road-ready electric vehicle. Many of these participants are teachers – middle school, high school and community college – looking to take this project back to their classroom to expose their students to different career opportunities.

What makes Switch so powerful is its range. Building one electric vehicle pulls students into automotive technology, electrical work, HVAC, engineering, electronics, and fabrication. Projects like this are critical early on-ramps into these careers.

We’ll be rolling out a full feature on this program tonight. Stay tuned!

MVP! MVP! MVP!

There’s a narrative forming about AI dividing people into “future-proof” groups. But that framing misses something entirely. A huge portion of skilled trades workers are already neurodivergent. They didn’t disappear into the system - they were filtered into hands-on work by an education model built for a specific type of learner.

Now companies are trying to actively recruit neurodivergent talent into tech and AI roles.
But here’s the irony: A lot of that talent is already in construction, manufacturing, and skilled trades.

Why are we still designing systems that filter people out instead of building ones that fit more types of minds?

A lot of skilled workers aren’t leaving because of the work, they’re leaving because of poor leadership.
Can you relate?

Episode 21 of the Skilled AF podcast featuring Devon Havenaar, Union carpenter, construction sup and founder of Bad Leader is up!

Devon is one of the youngest carpenter to have journeyed out in Canada, moved into a supervisor role at 25, and has spent the year since untangling what good leadership on a jobsite actually looks like when the default is still “tyrannical, push your will on others.”

He founded Bad Leader to tackle the leadership problem head on, and is convinced if you build people first, the profits will follow.

The tragic case of Amber Czech, the 20 year old female welder who was murdered at her place of work by a male co-worker, has sparked deeper conversations about safety, retention, and the reality women face in the skilled trades.

Everyone deserves not only opportunities, but safety, respect, the ability to build long-term careers, and to go home at the end of the day.

Amber Czech, Outi Hicks and the other women who’ve fallen before, you will never be forgotten. It ends with us. 💙

If you’re a woman, you’ve probably heard this one before…

What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve been told on the jobsite?

When Brooke Laing finally came off a two-year union waitlist and started her apprenticeship, she was told not to complain about any of the guys – no matter what they said or did.

The reasoning: it’s easier to fire one woman than it is to fire multiple guys.

And as a union apprentice, she couldn’t quit without a sit-down with a director of training who, in her words, was “really hard to get a hold of.”

Have you experienced anything like this in the workplace?
