This is an example of a silly idea that has been floating around my brain and I had to get out! As an adult, I’ve often reflected on how much of an impact the illustrations of Richard Scarry had on me when I was little. A few months ago I saw a meme asking which Scarry vehicle was your favorite, and I found myself thinking about that “shark car” in “Cars and Trucks and Things That Go”. So I wrote down a silly idea to create a Jaws themed illustration and I finally got around to it this week. I’ve also been wanting to experiment with a new gouache brush set in procreate, so I figured this would be a good one for it. I’m quite pleased with the result. What do you think?

The main event and reason for being in NYC this summer!
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards celebration and ceremony included readings of some of the award winning poems/writing by Anthony Edwards (Goose! Or Dr. Greene if youre more ER than Top Gun) and Amy Ryan (who I loved from her time on the Office and Only Murders but has been in many films and television as well as stage productions). Tony winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins fresh off his most recent win last weekend and Scholastic winner alum, was a speaker who advised students not to be discouraged of being confused when they’re learning, as confusion is part of the art making process which can only lead to breakthroughs in our work. Author Audrey Niffenegger (the Time Travelers Wife) received an alumni achievment award and spoke about her beginnings and how her other work experience was beneficial to being an artist and the career she dreamed of. SNL and 30Rock alum Tracy Morgan ended the night with some words of wisdom about how he only eats four cheese lasagna, if it has three cheeses he doesn’t want it. Okay, not really…but he did have some issues reading the prompter and it was clunky and hard to listen to but good for him for coming in clutch and speaking last minute afterer Emma Roberts couldn’t make it.
I’m beyond grateful for my school who sent me on this trip and so glad i was able to experience it with my student Audrey and her family. I hope to inspire more students to enter Scholastic this year and who knows, maybe we’ll be back! taken in Carnegie Hall by @thesteele

EPCOT.

Started drawing this Mickey sometime last year not knowing where it would go. Ended up here! A tribute to that image burned into my brain from the commercials where Mickey was waving atop Spaceship Earth and inspired by advertisement/teasers for EPCOT Center. My memories of EPCOT Center revolve around rainbow space suits, a purple figment of our imagination and his Dreamfinding friend, singing vegetables, and the promise of an exciting future with monorails everywhere.

Happy birthday EPCOT (and Walt Disney World)

Sketchbook update

I knew it would happen… I’ve come to the point where I got bored with straight painting and illustration so mixed media and experimentation has entered the chat.
One day I didn’t have time or a proper subject so I just started finding stuff on and around my desk and did a little collage page. And most recently I was experimenting with some transparency ink photo transfers which I plan to turn into a lesson with one of my level2 classes.

Photos of this little book don’t do the art justice. Looks much better in person.

Posted a story recently and mentioned my mixed media sketchbooks and some of you asked to see them. Here’s a brief tour of one started in 2016. Thanks for looking!

Sketchbook stuff

Recently started a new sketchbook so figured I’d post progress as I go. I’m taking a more traditional approach to these daily pages than what I normally tend to do in my sketchbooks. It’s essentially illustrations of daily life in ‘visual journal’ or documentation style pages. Anything from notes, ideas, and thoughts for other artwork, to observations of the world around me that day. I’ve kept up with at least a drawing a day and many times a page per day so far. Hoping I can keep the momentum up with this approach while I’m focusing on quick drawings from observation and taking reference photos then going back with color. Or I’ll start with watercolor then go back with ink after. Thanks for looking by @thesteele

25 years ago, on the morning of September 11, 2001, I was a high school senior in my art class in the classrooms on the second floor of the Polk Museum of Art. We didn’t have a tv in the room and heard of the news as it happened on a local radio morning show. It was surreal. It played out like a new Orson Welles War of the Worlds radio drama… but it was real. Once we finally got a tv wheeled into the room, we were glued to it in shock of the replays and live coverage as the towers collapsed. The morning was silent and needless to say not much school work being done, as the entire country and the world watched this tragedy unfold. I knew that this would affect all of our lives in some way - how we think, how we travel, how we speak to one another. That morning, through the shock, I somehow felt the sense that this life altering tragedy would somehow unite us as a country and I began working on a nine panel (almost) eleven foot long mixed media assemblage. The color scheme and designs of repeating stripes and stars were obvious. But the textures throughout the piece were never smooth - they were uneven and sometimes jarring to represent the uncertainty of what myself and so many others were feeling, juxtaposed with words of hope to express my want for togetherness as we healed after these attacks. I worked on the piece for several weeks as news continued of search and rescue through the rubble of what was now known as ‘Ground Zero’. I couldn’t help but think about my friends in NYC and the fact that my family and I had just been at the top of those towers just a few months prior to their fall. The finished piece ended up being the centerpiece on the main wall in our gallery in early 2002 and I was honored that my tribute to the fallen, to the heroes, and to the hope of a unified country would be seen and shared by so many.

Oil painting can be frustrating when you’re rusty, so I chose to do a digital oil painting in Procreate using the newer preset oils brush set.

My favorite SDCC reveal…😮

One of my favorite reveals from SDCC this year has to be this amazing Rocketeer figure, although the release date is questionable…is there even a Q5?! 🧐

Set to be released by Bigelows, this one looks like a true classic waiting to happen! Definitely inspired by the old Playmates Dick Tracy figures given the wide stance and scale, it almost feels like something ripped right out of the early 90s! Who doesn’t love a good retro figure?

Okay truth is, It’s completely unofficial, completely fake, and honestly one of my favorite things I’ve made in a while. Inspired by the incredible art by @adventurersproject (@thesteele ) this was a fun one to bring to life, stay tuned tomorrow for a giveaway post tomorrow!

Also if this was real I’d totally buy one though. 🚀
