CONTENT WARNING: This caption discusses sexual abuse (readers discretion is advised)

Neil carried a secret for years. When someone finally recognised it, he said it felt like a ten-tonne truck had been lifted off his shoulders.

As a child, he was sexually abused by a family member. His brother was too. Neither spoke about it for years.

Neil told me that pain followed him into fighting, crime and trouble with the police. When he eventually sought help for sleepwalking, a psychologist recognised there was something deeper behind his nightmares.

Finally, he could talk about what had happened.

When he told his family, his brother then had to open up about what had happened to him too.

Neil moved to the coast, finding some escape by the water. His brother turned to heroin and later died from an overdose. Neil told me he blamed himself for bringing their abuse into the open and making his brother confront it.

That was heartbreaking to hear. Speaking about what happened to him was never something he should have had to feel guilty for.

Later, Neil cared for his mum through cancer. After she died, everything compounded—the childhood trauma, the loss of his brother, the guilt he carried, and now losing his mum.

Although he had seen a psychologist earlier, he hadn’t sought professional help to work through everything that was building up.

Eventually, he had a nervous breakdown. He couldn’t work, the bank took his house, and he ended up living in his car.

When I asked what he wanted to share with someone going through a similar struggle, he said never be ashamed and spoke about recognising your triggers.

Going fishing. Spending time by the water. Connecting with a friend. Doing something that brings him a little happiness, even when he doesn’t feel like doing it.

These are the things he says help him keep going.

He spoke honestly about days when he hadn’t wanted to live. But he also spoke about his will to live now, and wanting to protect the freedom he still has.

What stayed with me was how simple those moments sounded—and how much they mattered.

Sometimes the simple things is how someone finds their way through another day.
