Moorish and Roman architecture make up this historic Denver building. Since its development in the late 1800’s, it’s surprisingly gone unchanged. Still in its original form with a few renovations, The Temple now houses many artists making incredible work around the city!

In my studio, big paintings don’t start on a frame.

I work on unstretched canvas, it’s simpler than storing huge finished pieces with nowhere to live. When I began this series, there wasn’t a show on the calendar yet; just time to work and see where it went.

I like the image to wrap around the stretcher bars (as opposed to a gallery wrap with painted edges). The sides are part of the piece.

Stretching changes things. You lose about six inches in both directions so the composition shifts. After it’s stretched, I go back in, sometimes a lot, sometimes it’s one small mark that finally brings the whole painting into balance.

So: getting ready for the show = stretching time.

Welcome to The Temple, home to my studio and the heartbeat of my practice. It’s the place I plant my feet and watch time disappear as ideas take form.

Don’t miss how these studio experiments evolve into finished pieces at my solo show:
