Sculpture by the Sea Bondi opened today. It's wonderful to be a part of this great event for the first time. There's a lot of fantastic sculpture on show and well worth a look

Here’s a little look back at Flip & Flappin’ Bird Puppets with Canberra artist Tom Buckland, where cardboard and recycled materials were transformed into wonderfully weird, moving bird puppets.

Three weeks of making, tinkering, experimenting, and getting these little creatures ready to flip, flap and come to life.

Thanks to everyone who came along and got their hands messy with us.

In July 2026 I had the pleasure of running a bird puppet workshop for @blank.platform
Over three weeks participants constructed their own moving articulated bird puppets from recycled cardboard and other found materials.

BIRD MACHINE

Bird Machine is an exhortation of an expeditiously changing planet where the machines of human industry are rapidly eroding the natural world in the name of growth and progress. There is a deep transitional grief: anxiety and a growing awareness that things are changing and a mourning for the loss of human, animal, and plant life.

Wings' is an immersive installation exploring the birdlife of North Sydney in the century old tunnels at The Coal Loader in Waverton: a multi-sensory event that brings science and creativity together. A co-production of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Wherenext Theatre Company, 'Wings' gives you the chance to walk through the tunnels and notice birds from a different perspective.

Wings runs till August 19th - 10am to 4pm at Sydney Coal Loader

This winter, You Are Here is hosting a series of cozy creative workshops at our new HQ in the city. Come learn something new, meet some lovely people, and make something to cherish.

FLIP & FLAPPIN’ BIRD PUPPETS

Get hands-on and join Canberra artist Tom Buckland transforming cardboard and other recycled materials into fun moving bird puppets. With simple materials participants will learn how to create simple mechanical mechanisms to make their bird flip, flap and come to life. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels.

Tom Buckland is a Canberra based artist. Working with recycled materials such as cardboard and salvaged electronics, Buckland creates playful, interactive and experimental installation, video and performance work that invites the audience to embark on a journey of discovery. They have exhibited and taught widely across Australia.

Participants will progressively create their bird puppets over three weeks:

Workshop 1 - Wednesday 24 June
Workshop 2 - Wednesday 1 July
Workshop 3 - Wednesday 8 July

All workshops run from 6:30pm-8:30pm at our Workshop in the city! Level 1, 131 City Walk.

All materials are provided. These workshops are designed to be welcoming, relaxed, and low-pressure — perfect for absolute beginners as well as people looking to reconnect with their creativity or try something different this winter.

Our space is alcohol-free, open to people aged 16+, and focused on creating a comfortable and inclusive environment where you can experiment, make mistakes, and enjoy the process.

PLUS! participants can share their work at our Open Day on Saturday 1 August if they’d like to.
