The Torch is saddened to hear of the passing of Marvins Antoine, 18, a first-year student at UMass Dartmouth. He was an involved member of the athletic community, a running back for UMassD’s football team. We send our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and teammates affected by this tragedy.

The Torch would also like to express our support for Kensley Macean in his recovery. No students deserve their education and opportunities to be cut short.

The Torch would like to extend the invitation for those who knew Marvins to contribute to a memory and photo board that will be shared on our website. The link to the form can be found in our bio and on our website.

We would also like to remind the campus community and those deeply affected by this tragedy that resources are available:

Counseling Center: Auditorium Annex
Main line: (508)-999-8648
Crisis Line: (508)-910-HELP

Center for Religious and Spiritual Life: Campus Center

NEW IN NEWS AND POLITICS

Staff Editor Aidan Danforth overviews the changes to federal loans, weighing the value of degrees between disciplines and individual students.

"This new provision has raised questions among UMassD students pursuing degrees for reasons unrelated to finances. Additionally, a 'high paying' versus 'low paying' job can be highly subjective as it can depend on one’s lifestyle, needs, and even location.

Oftentimes, many college students have a variety of reasons they go into their field, and money isn’t the only thing on students' minds as they make their way through higher education."

NEW IN CAMPUS LIFE AND EVENTS

Staff Writer Maya Pontes attended the Unpacking Relationships event where keynote speaker Ashley Bendiksen shared her experiences and raised awareness about abuse, trauma, and victim support.

"Driven by her own experience, Bendiksen works to educate people all around the world on abuse prevention, victim support, and trauma resilience.

Abuse and harassment culture can sustain itself in silence. The more we talk about these 'taboo' topics, the better we can identify and prevent harm. Bendiksen explained that for our communities to change, we must refuse to stay silent. Changing the culture doesn’t start at the extreme; it starts with, say, calling out that joke that’s not really funny or checking in on a situation that feels off."

NEW IN ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

Volunteer Writer Chris Holmes reviews the new "Resident Evil" movie, spoiler-free!

"Cregger takes the audience on a new kind of journey unlike any of the sci-fi-esque adaptations of the franchise released in the early 2000s. The story is reduced down to its most simplistic elements, and that is precisely where it shines.

The film follows Austin Abrams’ everyman, Bryan, as he journeys from point-to-point in an eerily desolate snowscape. There are no slam cuts to alternate locations, nothing to indicate a B-plot happening elsewhere, just Bryan and the audience moving through Cregger’s interpretation of the fictional Denver stand-in, Raccoon City."

NEW IN CAMPUS LIFE AND POLITICS

Seeing the Department of Education's latest changes to Title IX laws, Staff Writer Kyle Dietzsch outlines the laws and describes the process of reporting incidents at UMassD.

"David Gomes, UMass Dartmouth’s Chief Civil Rights Officer, gave a better sense of how the school handles complaints of discrimination, and what the changes might mean for students.

Gomes, who is also the school’s Title IX coordinator, explained that the full process is available to read online, though he also walked through it from his perspective. In short, complaints of sex-based discrimination, violence, assault, or harassment are investigated by the Office of Civil Rights before a hearing is conducted. These hearings, conducted over Zoom, have both the complainant and accused party present. It’s a procedure reinstated by the Trump administration, bringing a fair share of controversy."

NEW IN OPINIONS AND EDITORIALS 🤫🧏

Staff writer Noel Eckert contends with the rise of Braden Peters, a “looksmaxxing” content creator facing a slew of controversies.

"Social media is good at serving up a consistent slop of unlikable and increasingly outrageous characters for viewers to gawk at in dismay. One of the most famous recent examples of this is Braden Peters, better known by his online alias Clavicular."
