We are now in the final week of Peter Lynch's fantastic solo exhibition.

Showcasing the two main concerns of Peter's practice – enlarged monoprints of original watercolour paintings and densely layered monochrome paintings – it's a great introduction to Peter's work if it's new to you.

These monoprints start out as paintings at A4 or A3. Peter is seeking to make a gesture without engaging the whole body, hence the starting scale. The painting is then scanned and enlarged, which as well as creating a more confrontational scale draws out interesting artefacts in the original e.g. a contrast in the paper texture between the original paper and the paper used for the print as well as showing how strongly the extent of the brush contains the paint, with no bleed at all beyond the outermost bristle; both have the effect of seeming to make the painted gesture appear in relief to some extent.

Our current exhibition by Peter Lynch enters its penultimate weekend tomorrow and then its final week.

It is a calm, compelling and considered show which brings together Peter's monoprints and densely layered monochrome paintings.

Sincere thanks to David Mankin for coming to the gallery yesterday to give two fascinating talks.

These events marked the start of David's nationwide tour to coincide with the launch of his second book, Language of Paint.

It's always such a pleasure to talk to David about his work. Thanks to everyone who came along.

David's beautiful new book is available in the gallery and a selection of his paintings is also available to view here and on our website. taken in The Vanner Gallery by @thevannergallery

Peter Lynch's paintings are densely layered and richly textured, and it's perhaps this aspect of their making we encounter and process first. But we shouldn't overlook the vital role colour plays in their creation.

From the very beginning of the mixing of paint, Peter is corroding colour, fighting against the primaries. The resulting colours are idiosyncratic and are an essential part of the work. Each painting appears to comprise of only one colour across the picture plane, with no subject, the colour to some extent becoming the subject.

Peter Lynch | In Conversation
6 – 7pm | Tuesday 6 October

We're delighted to welcome Peter Lynch back to the gallery for a talk to accompany his solo exhibition, as if something might be expected of me.

The exhibition presents both sides of Peter's practice – enlarged monoprints of watercolour originals and his characteristic densely layered paintings – so we will explore both those concerns as well as Peter's wider inspiration and practice.

Places are free – to reserve yours please email hello@vannergallery.com taken in The Vanner Gallery by @thevannergallery

Peter Lynch's paintings are built up layer by layer and most often finished with his characteristic finger mark gestures. Here, the light plays across the front of the work, showing the painstakingly produced surface texture and the resolving, excavating matrix.

Peter's solo exhibition, as if something might be expected of me, is on view in the gallery now.
