Gary Irwin - Éist Anseo 017

The 17th edition of the series is here and it is MEGA 🚨‼️ Gary Irwin (@thevendettasuite) with a Balearic, Dubby mix for Éist Anseo.

Gary from Newtownards, Co Down started producing electronic music in 1992. He was engineer at David Holmes’ Exploding Plastic Inevitable studio in the mid-nineties, and released three of his own EPs on EPI as CPU and Synthetic Science.

After 10 years away from the dancefloor, he was enticed back through hearing Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston’s ALFOS sets and focused on a more Balearic style of music production, attracting the attention of Italian label Hell Yeah (@hellyeahrecordings), who have released most of his recent records as The Vendetta Suite, including The Kempe Stone Portal album in 2021. Gary has also released music on EPI, 13 Amp, Above Machine, Nein and Mystic Arts.

It’s a great privilege to have this exclusive mix so a huge thanks to Gary for being involved.

This year's Buena Onda Adriatic Beats and Beyond compilation is out today on @hellyeahrecordings and features my Deep Heat Dub of The Jam Answer. It's how I originally intended the track to sound before it took a cosmic disco detour on last year's 12". With a nod to the first Deep Heat compilation which was my first inroad to acid house. Always guaranteed to give a record a proper going over, fine words from Dr Rob on Scrabo Electric, and bang on with the references, especially Fats Comet. Thank you Rob @banbantonton , very much appreciated!

There's an obligatory mix of course...
Some obscure, some more familiar electro...

Electric Vendetta is actually an episode of Midsomer Murders featuring a series of naked bodies found in crop circles, but a field and some trees wouldn't really make for a very electro image to go with the mix.

Out today!

Four tracks of Newtownards folk music

Big ❤️ to Marco Gallerani for letting me realise this ode to my teenage years on his consistently quality @hellyeahrecordings

I think I've done enough now for Ards Tourist Board over the past few years.

There's a bit of a delay with the vinyl but they shouldn't be too long.

12" Vinyl and digital files available from the Hell Yeah Bandcamp.

For cheaper postage options in the UK try Juno or Phonica. Links below...

For local vinyl heads, Marion should be getting them in to Sound Advice Belfast in Banana Block, East Belfast when the shop opens again after the holidays.

"The Vendetta Suite continues to show his broad range on Hell Yeah with the Scrabo Electric EP. Youthful memories, mushroom trips, 80s electro, dub and sleazy disco all colour a nostalgic tribute to early beat street culture in his home town of Newtownards. Gary Irwin is a label mainstay with a thirst for weird and unconventional fusions that reframe 70s and 80s references through a contemporary lens. Drawing on memories of breakdancing, dub reggae, and teenage mischief, he channels the spirit of demolished record shops, discos, and local haunts that shaped his musical identity. From tape-swapping electro compilations and local characters to dub influences and teenage discos, each track reflects a personal chapter rooted in 1980s Northern Irish life. The wiggy rhythms of the title cut to the echo-laden 'A Dub For Dave', the punchy 80s drums of 'Uprock At Digby's Disco' and raw, textured funk breaks of 'Lead Mines Bonus Beats' all mean this EP blends cultural memories and musical history with undeniable style" by @thevendettasuite

The Vendetta Suite - Scrabo Electric EP

B2 Lead Mines Bonus Beats

The Lead Mines are a quarry and an area of countryside behind the council estate where I live. A busy mining site in the late 1800s and a location for some Game of Thrones scenes apparently, but also the scene of our teenage misbehaviour round 1988 - 1990 involving cheap cider and magic mushrooms.

Pic 3. Drinking den in 1988/89
Music supplied by The Sex Pistols, The Pogues, Crass, Dead Kennedys

Pic 4. That barn wasn't in quite so bad a state in 1990. Away from civilisation, the scene of many drink and/or mushrooms or acid fuelled gatherings. One notable time was when two farmers appeared firing shotguns while we were all tripping 😱
Soundtrack provided by The Stone Roses, De La Soul, 808 State and The Butthole Surfers

Pic 5. Scrabo Tower, where the Scrabo Electric shop got its name. You'll recognise it from the back cover of The Kempe Stone Portal album.

Pic 6. A view of Island Hill from the lead mines, which connects us back to my previous 12" The Jam Answer/Island Hill Microdot, still some available on the Hell Yeah Bandcamp. by @thevendettasuite

The Vendetta Suite - Scrabo Electric EP

B1 Uprock At Digby's Disco

Digby's was a local disco in Ards on a Saturday night. When I first went it was a roller disco, then a standard teenage disco, but in 1985/6 they had a half hour section during the night for the local breakdancers to do their thing. It has long since been demolished and is now a car park.
Its most famous visitors were George and Angie Best.... by @thevendettasuite
