After 7 years away from music and social media I am rediscovering my love for creating and sharing again. In large part by remembering the old church songs my parents taught me.

I recently took my guitar and visited my family in NC. I hope this little clip stirs up your faith like it does mine.

This time around I am committed to keeping the music I make about connecting, not competing. So follow @thewarrenbarfield and say hello. I look forward to connecting with you.

Left to right…
My mom on piano, my dad, me, my brother, a pic of my sister we will see again when we get HOME, and last… my sister Tonia. She is the first of the four of us and continues to lead. I love these people and the memories we have together singing songs of faithfulness and truth.

Sending blessings to you and your family today. by @thewarrenbarfield

I quit making music for years. Over 7 years to be exact.

When I was a kid my parents sang songs like this one and these songs made me want to write and sing myself.

I was “successful” and music became my career. But when I had a record deal in the music industry music became more about competition than connecting. I lost my love for it and quit.

It’s July 11, 2024, I just got back on Instagram after 7 years away. I went from being a songwriter to a homesteader. A recording artist to a farmer. Booking gigs to chasing pigs.
Singing about what a husband and a dad should be to actually trying to live it.

After all these years I have found a song again. Seasons.

Tell me something bout yourself? Anything. Favorite color? Married? Kids? Hobby? Creative? Passion? Are you a dreamer? Have you laid something down have you picked something up. I can relate. I would love to know something about you. Mostly i would love to encourage you to remember who you are. Say it out loud. Don’t let anyone else define you. The world needs a light. Shine.

I’ve learned that the right person makes the ordinary moments priceless.

Wish I could live it over and over again just like this.

I’m not your pastor.

In 1 Peter 5:1–4, Peter speaks to the elders of the church and tells them to “shepherd the flock of God that is among you.” The word translated shepherd is the Greek poimainō (ποιμαίνω), meaning to shepherd, tend, or care for a flock. It’s the same word Jesus uses when he tells Peter, “Tend my sheep” in John 21:16.

That’s why I say I’M NOT YOUR PASTOR before the videos I post on Wednesdays. I can share what I’m learning. I can encourage you. I can point you toward Scripture. But a pastor is more than somebody you listen to once a week.

I’ve never raised sheep on our farm. I’ve raised pigs, chickens, turkeys and cows. I promise you, if I only showed up once a week to feed them, they would die.

A shepherd does more than show up once a week with a good “meal” message. A shepherd knows his flock. A shepherd is present, tending, protecting, guiding and caring for his flock.

Find that. Find people who know you well enough to know when you’re not impressive. People you trust enough to give permission to speak truth into your life.

…context for this video: Sat night & Sun morning…

Thank you to my friends who let me borrow a stage, lights and a sound system so we could have a barn concert Saturday night. Just over 100 people came from all over the country for the concert.

Thank you to my wife and kids who worked hard cleaning and setting up the barn, parking cars, making sure everyone had coffee and snacks and felt welcome at our home.

Thank you to the folks who came. Many who traveled in and booked hotel rooms, which meant they were going to miss their church communities Sunday morning while traveling home. So my family and I invited anyone who wanted to come back Sunday morning to join us in the barn for a hymn sing-along.

Just over 50 people came back Sunday morning. We sang hymns, read Scripture together, and I shared some thoughts on how God uses trials in our lives to make us more complete.

My friend Brett got this video of me sharing why I say “I’m not your pastor” before the videos I post on Wednesdays.

I was stuck. Not quite writers block, I just didn’t know where the song wanted to go.

So I went for a drive.

Between my house and tractor supply I wrote the second verse.

I called Megan and sang her the lyrics from the tractor supply parking lot.

It’s so bittersweet
To have more than we ever dreamed
Then one day one of us will leave too soon
And the other will be left behind
To tell a story of the greatest kind
About a love that lasted a lifetime through

Everyday people fall out of love
It fades away for some but they’re not us
How lucky are we to find ourselves in
