Submissions are open for the Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill. It’s a dangerous, unworkable, bigoted and cruel bill that will cause significant harm to transgender and intersex communities. We hope you’ll make a submission against it. Lauren Craig, Green Candidate for Wairarapa talked to us about the bill.

As parents, from the day our first child was born, my husband and I have had to be part of the health system.

Our eldest has had many, many surgeries. His most recent was last year. He’s had two hospitalisations this year.

I can tell you - ED and the wards have never been worse. Last year he was accidentally given too much medication in ED because it was so hectic.

Last year, for the first time in 13 years I called in the paeds team into ED from my phone to treat my son because I was so concerned about his care.

It was not the fault of the nurses - but when you’re desperately understaffed, desperately under resourced, and desperately overworked - mistakes happen. And mistakes are happening.

I cried listening to the mum on RNZ talk about her child’s cancer treatment. My son was most medically fragile under another government. Health was not funded as it should have been then. But it’s so so so so much worse now. The hiring freeze is horrendous and there’s no transparency by this government around it.

Having a child who is medically fragile is terrifying. We should not be making it even harder for these brave kids and their parents.

Vote for these kids and vote for their parents. Vote green or labour and get these bastards out. by @theweekly.nz

A quick note from Emily and Josh to our [insert place you live, this should be in your franchise booklet] community.

Dear community,
There’s been plenty of talk lately about grocery prices and what’s next for New Zealand’s grocery sector. We wanted to share where we stand, as your local, provincial, neighbourhood supermarket owners.

Unlike you, our workers have jobs, and they do those jobs. Our team is in store from 3am until past 9pm, seven days a week. I’m not sure if you know how hours work, but that’s a lot of hours.

“Look, the government have already created a lot of harm, and they will continue to do so if we don’t stop them, but they cannot kill Te Tiriti while it is on the lips and in the hearts of the people.

“We must fight for it, we must continue to advance it, we owe that to both the past generations who fought through politically dire times to build its status to where it is today, and we owe it to future generations who will be burdened with the work we don’t carry out in our time.

“So before we start talking about hope, I think we need to consider our duty to past and future generations, and what it means to be in the right relationship to the past, the future, this whenua, and the people of this whenua.” - @tinangata @votefortetiriti

The Ministry doesn’t seem to want the public to know exactly how much AI it’s using - or what it’s using AI for.

We call on the Government to return the Total Mobility Scheme subsidy to 75% so people with disabilities can continue travelling with independence, dignity and respect.

The Total Mobility Scheme provides government-subsidised discounted taxi and specialist transport services for people whose disabilities prevent them from using public transport. This scheme allows users independence, safety, and dignity when travelling and accessing their communities.

However, as of July 1 the government has decreased the nationwide subsidy from 75% to 65% and the maximum amount you can claim per trip has been reduced in most regions. This reduction is detrimental to those of us who rely on the scheme for independence.

Sitting at the airport with a full heart after lending a helping hand at the DSS Bill petition handover today.

In a week where so much has felt rushed, heavy and uncertain, it was deeply moving to stand alongside carers, disabled people, whānau and advocates who showed up with clarity, courage and care.

Thank you to everyone who signed, shared, submitted, spoke, rallied, organised, witnessed and refused to let disabled people be treated as a budget line.

With gratitude to @priyancanzlp for receiving the petition, and to @maramadavidson for speaking to the crowd gathered to support Victoria Coleman and all the carers and disability whānau she represented today.

This is what community looks like. Without despair or quiet quitting; with resilience, self-determination and outspoken commitment to one another.

A reminder that care shows strength not weakness. Unconditional love is not unlimited capacity. And a fair go includes disabled people and their carers.

There is still room to build a better rights-based bill, one worthy of the disabled community it will serve.

Because what works for disabled people, works for everyone. What enables whānau whaikaha to thrive, actually empowers us all to thrive.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who showed up today.

I’m so proud to call you my community 🤍 taken in Beehive Parliament Wellington by @theweekly.nz
