Hi to friends new and old 👋🏻

I turn 27 this week and the last 2 months have been a whirlwind.

I also hit 20k followers this week - and I’m just so utterly grateful and thankful that I’ve found my little community here that resonate with some of the work that I do.

I’d never have imagined this when I started @theweirdandwild 6 years ago.

So I thought perhaps it’s time I did a small self introduction, and I struggled to write this intro because I know it’s also not the entirety of who I am and also putting it in writing felt so permanent when I know that my work and my identity evolves

But I also have had many of you here who’ve seen me through my evolutions across the past 6 years and I’m thankful that you’ve stuck around - I see you!

I only hope for your kindness and grace as I navigate each day, come what may and to make mistakes but also learn from them fast.

And to continue to push for greater climate literacy and also the bridging of the art world with the science and human ones.

Thank you for being in my space and for learning alongside me as we navigate the complexities of the climate crisis.

Beyond just talking about how hot it is, we need to think about the different ways our society can be better supported to cope with heat.

Heat vulnerability is something that we don’t talk much about, but we should.

This post highlights a heat vulnerability community outreach project run by Singapore Youth Climate Action, which revealed the ways heat vulnerability shows up in our under-resourced communities.

There’s a lot more we need to do as a society to help us deal with heat in a warming world, and we need to pay attention and care for those in our community and also advocate for policies that can help us all better deal with heat.

How can we be proud of our City in Nature when we haven’t really taken care of the nature bit?

I’m filled with grief and sadness but also questions about the stronger Singapore we want to build.

News after news that just calls for the decimation of nature in the name of progress and foresight sits weird with me when there’s so little that we know.

The thing is I don’t want us to be fatigued. We can’t. There’s a lot at stake here.

So if you’re wondering what’s going on and what’s been said and also the climate angles to this news, I’ve done what I can to capture this here.

To love this country is to have your heart broken sometimes but also have your soul renewed when we show up for each other 💌❤️🇸🇬

From writing the loveliest cookbook that’s a love letter to the flavors of our region by @pameliachia, connecting us to the fish we eat and its realities @pasarfishsg, @stridyapp and our #EastCoastBeachPlan to care for our coasts and spaces, the birders waiting patiently for a chance to see our shorebirds, the creativity passion and courage at @sgclimaterally, the nature walks by our shores or in the forests by friends, to the powerful folks using their voices for our forests @mel_struc and many who have contributed resources and time to organize, those who are facing all odds to preserve slowness in our country that demands more @groundupinitiative, creating spaces for all to enjoy @temasekshophouse and so so so many more. 💚

Our dissent sometimes get portrayed as being difficult, when all of us are doing everything in our power to preserve things that makes our home, home. May we continue to speak up bravely for things that helps Singapore move forward ❤️

Forests are valid land uses too.

From the words of two ecologists, here’s a IG-version of their opinion piece now out on The Straits Times. I hope you give this thoughtful piece a read as we also process and make sense of all the news on the forests at Maju, Gillman, Tengah, Sembawang, and more that we’ve lost and yet to lose. Our voices contribute to the version of Singapore we want to live in.

[CHANGE IN TIME FOR THE HERITAGE AND FOREST WALK - IT WILL BEGIN AT 2:30PM AT HANDLEBAR]

You may have heard the news, but all is not lost only if we do something about it.

In the past week, HDB released two Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) at once, inviting the public to submit feedback within a month. This was done while 3 other EIA consultations were concurrently ongoing (just concluded last week).

These EIAs propose new developments that lead to the loss of five secondary forests in Singapore.

You may or may not have visited these forests, but they serve as strong ecological buffers and corridors for other living creatures, flora and fauna that we co-exist with. Such forests will only become increasingly rare and few. 🌳🌳🌳⬇️

As Singapore develops, we don’t have to just watch this happen. What questions can we ask, in conversations we have, or through official platforms? 💬

Is redevelopment of forested land the only solution we should accept, or are there other possibilities we can explore? While our land use masterplan is predetermined decades ahead, it should also reflect our people’s evolving needs and preferences. While we acknowledge hopes for more public housing, what other aspirations have we written off and left behind? Can we creatively design policies for them to co-exist?

We hope that this post can help encourage us to ask these questions to ourselves and our decision makers.

In an interconnected world, what is happening around the world - like global supply disruptions and climate change - impacts our power and our wallets. But being informed can help us take actions that make sense for what we need right now.

This infographic aims to be a guide to not just understand how our electricity is impacted by global events, but also how we can make sense of our options in our own homes to make informed choices about our electricity use.

I worked with @ema_singapore to produce this guide to help you make sense of electricity plans and explain what goes into the prices you pay. I hope this helps! 💡💡💡 by @theweirdandwild

A lil recap of a wild encounter two weeks ago, sorta in time for World Oceans Day. (TW: mentions and images of dead animals)

I arrived in Seattle in May, not realizing it was the beginning of the whale migration northwards. That begun my countless efforts with my binos out along the coast hoping to see whales. I even monitored tidal charts, hoping that they’d venture closer to shore during high tides.

But a chance encounter happened one morning when I was up at 5am!! to explore the tidal pools. I was so shocked to see a beached whale that I thought it was an art installation at first because what are the odds.

I was in awe of the beautiful creature in front of me and also so so sad to see not one, but two whales washed up on the beach. A humpwhale, and a gray whale.

I quickly dropped an email alerting the Orca Network and @cascadiaresearch (because I didn’t have a local number to call them) to also confirm the ID of these whales and quickly learned about the alarming numbers of gray whale strandings the West Coast is seeing this month which isn’t normal. (Unforch, the lil humpback was probably lost and ended up stranded which isn’t abnormal.)

Likely because of human-caused climate change.

It’s heartbreaking to see our impact in this manner this close.

I thought to document my learnings and also this moment on here. As a reminder of the work that we need to do to advocate for stronger climate action with decision makers everywhere.

If you spot a beached whale, google the networks and authorities to contact and alert them with as many details as you can! Stay a safe distance away, and observe from a far.

We don’t need to all be experts in order to support the environmental movement. 🔩🎨💬💚📣

All that glitters isn’t just gold and while donations and funding are super critical, what’s equally important is people! From pulling weeds, to identifying invasive species, to reorganizing donations and also sharing about reuse systems, there are plenty of organisations looking for your help and your expertise.

Whether it’s sharing about initiatives online, supporting them at your workplace, and giving your time and effort, every little bit counts.

If you’re feeling anxious about the state of our planet, action is a great antidote and you will also be surrounded by people who care. If you’re looking for opportunities to get involved, @giving.sg is a platform by @nvpcsg for you to volunteer and support a cause you care about.

“Paper” batteries made right here in Singapore.

A low-carbon future relies greatly on batteries. But batteries as we know it today is produced, used and disposed in ways that can be harmful to our environment. Hence, we need better ways to make them.

Meet Carlo, the founder of Flint, a Singapore-based company making batteries with cellulose (which is what paper is made of). Here about his journey, what inspired him to start Flint and what keeps him going.

Sometimes, the solutions to the world’s problems are already around us, and already in our hands.
