A few favorite @salty_brother snaps from an unforgettable week at the Youth Sailing World Championships in šŸ‡§šŸ‡·

Team USA consisted of 15 athletes racing foils, skiffs, dinghies and multihulls. Super proud of the efforts of our sailors this week after five L O N G days of racing. And to our team of legendary coaches JC, @quinnlakewilson & Steve: thanks for bringing your A game, lads and keeping us all sharp.

The old adage says the race is won (or lost) before the sails even go up in the morning. And the credit of our team goes to the individuals, teammates and coaches at home who pushed us day in and day out to get to this level.

There is no secret recipe to success. Hard work works. by @thewindcoach

I started coaching as a way to stay on the water between regattas and the process has opened my eyes to so many interesting areas of study that make the sport so complicated and engaging.

It was just a few years ago when I really started to think of myself more coach than athlete and leaning into that really helped things start to click.

What I’m most grateful for is the opportunity to work alongside athletes who are pushing themselves to new levels. We all want to go fast and win races, but to win every minute and every opportunity off the water as well. The granular focus of the details that matter is inspiring.

It’s been an epic winter in Miami and I feel lucky to work with such a talented group of exceptional humans and sailors. With so many lessons and takeaways from foiling, communication, sail trim and so many other topics I have filled three notebooks and two hard drives with footage.

In our Sunday morning chat by the crane, @teamparadiseinc legend Magnus Liljedahl šŸ… said that to become a champion demands a consistency that is unique to our 9 to 5 ā€œclock in/clock outā€ culture. In his words, ā€œyou have to be the same person all the time.ā€ And that mindset of keeping the pressure on to perform every act strikes me as very wise. To me that’s what is most appealing about the pursuit of sport. And surely in other areas of life as well but for some reason the wind caught a hold of me when I was just a boy, and thankfully has yet to let me go.

2026 Youth Champs, bringing the energy!

Big breeze, surfable swell, and America’s best youth sailors pushing each other from the first start to the last finish. A little waiting, a lot of weather, and full send when the conditions came together.
One more day in Long Beach. National titles and spots at Youth Worlds in Portugal are on the line. Let’s see who brings it home!

Bravo to @garrett789s aka ā€˜Super G: The Icon of the Seas’ for placing 2nd 🄈 at @iqfoilyouthjunior World Championships in Costa Brava, Spain. It was incredibly fulfilling for me to hold the water bottles this week.

Garrett had been steady all week in the top ten, through wind delays and light air racing, which was a real challenge for someone at his size.

The questionable breeze makes the downwind slalom racing an all out ā€œzone fiveā€ suffer fest.

This Championship was an amazing event in a beautiful venue. The iQ FOiL @iqfoilyouthjunior class is winning with organization and ā€œathlete firstā€ decision making. Technical standards and the starting system achieve a fair playing field for this no long emerging class, now in its second Olympic quadrennium.

American windsurfing was once thought to be a thing of the past, the resurgence of US success in the World stage is proving otherwise. Garrett is the youngest of the first wave of the Clearwater windsurfing dynasty founded by laser sailor turned boardhead @justin_ahearn

Led by his passion for windsurfing and appetite for competition, guided by @adrienfrance3 Garrett spent a year in a French sport academy windsurfing 5-6 days a week and traveling with French peers on iQ FOiL. He got so good by the end of that first year, he nearly beat all his teammates at the World Championships in 2025. He returned to the US his senior year to finish highschool.

This past season has been a ā€œswab summerā€ for young January joining American iQers Noah Lyons, Dominique Stater and Makani Andrews in Cadiz, Spain at their european training base. That squad has invested heavily in equipment testing and technical refinement. The lowest man on the totem pole, Garrett has taken full advantage while developing his skills amongst his decorated teammates.

Garrett’s skills and World Championship results are reflective of his endless hunger for competitive success and indicative of the hours he’s invested in his sailing.

Way to cook Chef Garrett. Those starts šŸ¤ŒšŸ½šŸ¤ŒšŸ½ . Bravo šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

Mucho effort and support

This past week ā€œI learned to never underestimate myself,ā€ one sailor commented, ā€œI felt so much more motivated to push through soreness and try my best because I was in this environment of people who were also motivated.ā€

Thanks to everyone (sailors, coaches, guest speakers) who joined our Youth National Team Camp in Rhode Island this week. May have been our best one yet…..and we’re just getting started šŸŽÆ by @thewindcoach

Not since 2002 has the United States won the ILCA 6 boys (Laser) division at the Youth Worlds. I texted my old roommate Andrew Campbell to let him know there’s a new sheriff in town, mateocoates laid it down in Vilamoura amongst the best in the world and stood at the top of the podium Friday night- World Champion. This guy impresses me not only with his skill but with how friendly he is to his teammates and competitors: ā€œKindness is not weaknessā€ his mother told me at the closing ceremony, and I couldn’t agree more.

Team USA Nacra 15 bronze medalists Dylan and Casey @lupetortillasailing put together an amazing week, after placing 5th last summer in Italy, they were hungry for a medal and worked together at such an impressive and respectful level, supporting one another, communicating so well, that I forgot they were teenagers and started taking notes for myself.

There were moments in the event that many other teammates were in medal contention, between 3 and 35 knots of breeze in the cool 61 degree Atlantic, our group worked incredibly hard to perform their best. The week was not without bumps, bruises and injury and our team of 22 rallied around one another to represent these United States.

I’m extremely proud of all our Team USA athletes and coaches this year- the results and podium ceremony is a such a tiny sample of the entire event. The resolution helps make the story good, but the most important part of any story is the characters. And these wonderful people continued to impress me all week with their passion, friendship and kindness.

Obrigado to our coaching staff @giuliaconti @chapmanrosie @bowerssailing @metalpelican @quinnlakewilson @ussailing , our team of parents, the proud supporters of the Youth Worlds Team @sailingfdnny and to our 16 athletes (13-18 years old) who just had the experience of a lifetime. Bravo !

ā€œYour video over 3 minutes won’t be recommended to new audiencesā€ā€¦ā€¦..lol; good. This self indulgent meditation is for mi gente. Please enjoy my rendition of ā€œa pirate looks at forty.ā€

This day has been a doozy for me to wrap my mind around but I finally got to a quiet place of acceptance. Let’s all move forward with more attention for the things that matter, and may our zest for life continue to grow and expand the warm glow of its resonance. Time to throw another log on the fire. peace and love, amigos by @thewindcoach

I’m eating my dinner now after 9 days in Brittany, France coaching sailing….doing a job I didn’t know existed when I was in high school and they asked, ā€œwell, what do you want to be when you grow up young man?ā€

Enjoy some funny clips of my narration of some races as well as clips of the amazing Crepe station at the venue, as well as my amazing roasted poulet (wee wee wee) I cheffed up for the boys.

Huge FELICITATIONS to @garrett789s aka scary gary aka the Super G, Icon of the Seas for placing 5th overall at this years @iqfoilyouthjunior World Championship.

Three hundred and seventy six (376) youth windsurfers competed against one another in a festival of international camaraderie and sport. And BY THE WAY 101 girls, women, female windsurfers - how awesome is that!

If you’re still reading this, stop and go do something productive (blessings šŸ™šŸ½) but I just have to say, I have spent the last 30 years of my life in the windsurf fleet, longing for the participation numbers, enthusiasm, and competitiveness that can be found in Europe at home in the States. This week is no different, I’m absolutely satisfied by the regatta atmosphere and scratching my head that we don’t have this matched appetite or infrastructure for high performance back home.

Anyone who wants to take a crack at the best youth sport in the world, please send me a message and I will personally help you because it is absolutely the best. The ā€œboat parkā€ is full of young, athletic, energetic youths playing games, socializing and the action on the water is fast paced, of consequence, and requires an elite level of skill.

Big congrats to the @iqfoilyouthjunior class for creating something amazing ! by @thewindcoach

Thx to @foilingmagazine for sharing snippets of our Wing Foil Coach Camps (WFCC) hosted by @ussailing last winter. It was an illuminating opportunity to build ā€œhow to teach wing foilingā€ curriculum with the best and brightest.

Working on the calendar for 2026 right meow.
