Antoine Tavan is a name I’d like to see more collectors talking about. A Grand Feu enamel dial on copper, steel hands cut, shaped and polished by hand, and an ETA 2824-2 modified by the maker for a 24-hour display. The sun and moon on the hour hand guide you between the day and night scales. I’m still learning about Roger Zarsoso’s wider watchmaking background, but this piece alone gives me plenty of reason to follow his work. At CHF 1,300, the amount of handwork here really impressed me. A room full of great watches, good people and even better conversation. It was a pleasure to host this private gathering with @themeridiancircle_london, @happyhorologists and @beyondordinaire. A big thank you to the representatives from @czapekgeneve, @lederertimepieces, @langeheyne, @j.s.watchmaking, @rudyssilva and @alpharo_uk for bringing their watches and sharing the stories behind them. A good friend went to a Journe event recently and told me how often Ōtsuka Lōtec came up in conversation. Collectors either had one or were trying to get one. After spending time with the No. 8, I can see why. There is a steampunk quality to it, with the exposed mechanics and instrument-like display. It feels futuristic, yet remarkably restrained. I often find watches with this sort of design go a little too far for my taste. Katayama has judged it beautifully. It feels distinctly Japanese in its attention to detail and the way every moving part has a purpose. The jumping hour and the minute display resetting at the top of the hour are difficult to stop watching. One No. 8 recently sold for $56,100 at Loupe This, against a Japanese retail price of roughly $6000. The Czapek Antarctique Flying Diamonds balances modern independent watchmaking with an impressive amount of restraint. The deep blue aventurine dial has the depth and sparkle of a clear night sky, with 13 custom-cut diamond hour markers sitting beautifully against it. Diamond setting can easily feel excessive, but this has been handled tastefully. There is enough brilliance to elevate the dial without overwhelming the design. The 40.5mm steel case is only 10.6mm thick, giving it a sleek profile on the wrist alongside the integrated bracelet. Through the caseback, Czapek’s in-house SXH5 movement and platinum micro-rotor offer plenty to admire.
