I had the pleasure of doing the sound for Luke Wright the other night. The promoter called me on the off-chance I might know someone with a PA system and lights who could do it. I’d done the sound for him once before when he came to Voewood, an Arts & Crafts stately home owned by the legendary Simon Finch. That night Simon and I were his support act in our guise as a spoken word and electronic music duo. I think we got the gig because I own a PA system, a ramshackle and dubious looking affair that actually sounds better than any small PA system I’ve ever come across. Anyway, Luke’s performance was captivating - I’d urge everyone to go see him if they get the chance which is highly likely if you live in the UK because he’s just started a long and comprehensive UK tour. by @thewrecklesseric

Sometimes a WEM Copicat is the only solution…they’ll probably tell you otherwise- they certainly told me otherwise, but what do they know anyway? It’s taken me most of my long life to realise they know fuck all, same as me. Henceforth I shall move forward safe in the certitude of delusion. Here we go! by @thewrecklesseric

We took a trip to London today to meet my dear old friend Humphrey Ocean at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition where Amy got to see my two paintings hanging quite wonderfully crookedly next to a big Grayson Perry tapestry, with red “sold” dots next to both of them. A proud moment for me. And Amy got to meet Humphrey for the first time - wish I had a commemorative photo but you wouldn’t want to see a couple of old gits spoiling an otherwise lovely photo of Amy would you? So you get my two paintings on a white-painted woodchip background in a badly composed photo. That woodchip stuff gets everywhere - I hear they even have some in Buckingham Palace! by @thewrecklesseric

My brother-in-law John McMahon. John shuffled off this mortal coil last week. I imagine him riding celestial bike trails somewhere out in the cosmos. He died doing what he loved, riding a bike trail with a friend. He sat down to take a rest, blacked-out and never came back. Is that such a bad way to go? I think he'd be happy with the final outcome - he always said if there was something wrong he didn't want to know about it. He took an aspirin every day and never went to the doctor, probably hadn't had a check-up since he was in the navy. He called me his brother from another mother, regaled me with stories of life aboard an aircraft carrier - the scary wonders of the Indian Ocean. Two and a half years sleeping next to the engine room ensured everyone in the place heard the stories, and you might get a complimentary shower when he got really animated. Which of course he did - a big man who danced like a performing bear when he'd had a couple, his enthusiasms shone light on stuff you might have thought you didn't care about - how Jethro Tull had the roof of the Pittsburgh Civic Arena open up at the climax of their set sometime back in 1975; the leaving of Lynyrd Skynyrd's final concert in Texas before the plane crash just as the band launched into their Freebird encore: 'We can catch them next time - but right now we need to get back to the base...WRRRONGGGG!!' he exclaimed as he recounted the story in a packed car driving through Los Angeles recently. My daughter, Luci, had only just met him. She turned to me: 'John...I'm a fan' she said. He once took us on a Civil War history tour of his adopted hometown, Fredericksburg, Virginia - I can't stand that sort of thing but I was fascinated, he brought it all to life. John McMahon: sailor, plumber, biker, high school history teacher, cycle tour guide, enthusiast, story teller... a beatnik, one part Charles Bukowski, two parts alter boy - loud, contrary, big-hearted, and often infuriating - my brother from another mother - I love that man. Happy trails John! by @thewrecklesseric

Our friend Chin Keeler came and played the drums on bits of Amy’s record. First time I’ve recorded them in this room - the drums sounded slightly different to how it was last time I recorded them back in upstate New York. Different drummer of course, with a much more British approach somehow. It was all a bit thrilling! by @thewrecklesseric

We’re thirty days into recording Amy’s album. There’s a beautiful and fucked-up world outside that we’re never fully disconnected from though it’s a close run thing here at the Beach Bar On The Moon. If we stop they’ve won. Love to all x by @thewrecklesseric

Taking time off from recording Amy’s new album, we’ve come for a walk in the seaside town of Mundesley where we see a poster for the Walker Brothers - versatile vocalists! Two of the brothers appear to be sisters, or at least a mum and possibly the parole officer to the Brother Walker who looks like he’s ‘been away’ for a while. Top class entertainment! Hope it rains…but perhaps not on these versatile vocalists! by @thewrecklesseric

This is the only Live Photo of my new band. The photo is wide and narrow so I could only fit Amy and Emily in - Camille’s out of shot over on the right pumping out bass lines on a bass synthesiser, so she’ll get her own photo tomorrow. We’re not looking our best because it was a catastrophically hot night in a basement in Southend-on-Sea but it’s all I’ve got. We’ll be doing this thing at the Boogaloo Bar in London’s bustling Highgate district next Sunday afternoon, 26th July. It’s totally free to get in and Emily and Camille will be kicking things off around 2:30pm in their capacity as Lassie, an unprecedentedly great two piece who have never before played in London. After that they’ll be joined by Amy Rigby as my backing group - three women who are all coincidentally divorced from drummers. See you there, Sunday 26th July at the Boogaloo Bar- admission totally free!! by @thewrecklesseric

A week on Sunday, 26th July - nobody knows quite how to bill this, least of all me. I’ve been working with a band called Lassie - Emily and Camille- two women, one drum, a big old surf guitar and two voices that delight and send chills. Lassie also act as my backing group, Camille swapping her guitar for a bass synthesiser. They’re joined by Amy Rigby who plays the other guitar and even gets to perform a couple of her own songs. For me and Amy it’ll be a welcome break from working flat out every day on her new album. Lassie will play a short support set (their London debut) and then the three women, who are all coincidentally divorced from drummers, will join me for my set. It’ll be loud, it’ll be exciting and it’ll be fun. Plus admission is totally free! If you’re in London I hope you can come. by @thewrecklesseric

We’ve been in the studio now for days and days recording Amy’s new album. I hardly leave the house. The other morning I took a walk down the garden with a cup of tea and felt quite insecure, but here we are, out and about, doing our version of senior citizens watching the clock with time on our hands. Back to work soon, no time to lose - albums don’t record themselves! by @thewrecklesseric

You can say what the fuck you like, and I probably wish you wouldn’t, but Lily Allen’s West End Girl is utterly fucking fantastic. Don’t just diss it because that’s your default, go and see it and enjoy having an INFORMED opinion for a change. by @thewrecklesseric
