Absolute banger of a night, as the kids would say. Peter Hook and the Light put on an incredible performance covering various Joy Division and New Order songs, and while I have seen New Order a number of times, it hits different in an intimate venue like History. @steviegpjr and @tlbrake were missing in action but always there in spirit. I’ll never not love hearing Ceremony, Temptation and Atmosphere live ❤️

Release what is not yours to carry 🩵

Step one: recognize what isn’t yours. Often harder than actually releasing the inherited. And if you have tips…by all means, please share 😆

Step two: set it down, even though it may suck at your hands and not want to let go and resist, resist, resist

Step three: repeat 😘

“so unpack” is one of ~150 pieces from my debut poetry collection, REBIRTH, which is available to purchase through my link in bio.

What baggage have you released - or are trying to let go of lately? I would love to hear from you 🩵

Main character energy for my new novel in progress! If you haven’t heard of Marina Abramovic, Google her right now. She’s a Serbian performance artist, and she’s epic (and her work is fearless, provocative, and boundary-pushing). Though my protagonist isn’t an artist herself, she works in the art world - well, adjacent to it - and she embodies much of this card’s symbolism and energy.

In astrology, the “year” begins with Aries season, so happy new year y’all! This year, in an effort to be more intentional with how I spend my time and where I put my energy, I chose a word: Sacred. While I still have to do things like tidy and run annoying errands and wait on hold and file taxes and other unsavoury things, I do try as much as I can to remember what matters. What’s important. What is worthy of awe, what is divinely inspired or purposeful. My family, my friends, my work, and (finally) my physical being, which has taken a beating over the last few years as I had two kids in quick succession. What’s your word of the year? I want to know!! Tell me in the comments ❤️🥰

NIGHTHAWKS....the movie.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am thrilled to announce that Toronto’s C’Mon Mort Productions has optioned my short story NIGHTHAWKS, first published by Texas-based Dark Moon Digest, for a film - and what’s even more exciting is that I’ll be writing the screenplay!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Grateful to Ashleigh Rains and C’Mon Mort Productions for this incredible opportunity...NIGHTHAWKS was made for the silver screen, knives, evil waitresses and all!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Note, this is NOT the official poster or anything - just a little fun I had with Canva after I learned that my original idea of me posing with a butcher knife could get me banned from Instagram. Live and learn, right?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I will keep y’all posted...and if you didn’t get to check out yesterday’s story excerpt, please read it and let me know your thoughts!

In anticipation of tomorrow’s exciting NIGHTHAWKS announcement (hint: it involves Toronto’s C’Mon Mort Productions)...here’s some prose instead of poetry for you on this frigid Friday!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To be honest, I haven’t been writing any poetry these days. Between my novel and managing kids & life/flu season, I’m not in much of a poetic frame of mind! Instead, I wanted to share with you guys an excerpt from my first published short story, NIGHTHAWKS. It’s a horror piece about a man on the run from a bad breakup who stops at a roadside diner for a bite to eat...and learns that he might be what’s on the menu.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s announcement...and I hope you like this little teaser excerpt!

So honoured to have a story (“you, on your thirty-fifth birthday”) in the winter 2024 issue of The New Quarterly! I have been a big fan of this long-standing and respected literary journal for years, and I could not be happier to have joined its list of contributors. Thanks to editor Pamela Mulloy and team for the honour ❤️. Issue #169 is available at selected newsstands and bookstores now, or order a copy online by visiting their website!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A little tidbit about what inspired this story. When my eldest son was about a week old, maybe two, I had been awake for a few days, utterly and desperately exhausted but unable to sleep. In the middle of the night, baby sleeping on my lap, I heard the distant sounds of a party outside, seemingly from the balcony of the condo right above ours. And I had what I learned later was probably a panic attack (had no idea what I was experiencing at the time). Years later, I took this tiny slice of experience and fictionalized it. The narrator in this story is NOT me, and nothing in the story actually happened...but the emotions behind the fiction were very, very real, and I think are probably shared by many new moms. If you have questions or want to share your own experiences, just DM me! And I hope you enjoy the story.

Becoming a mother has been one of the most profound experiences of my life. Challenging and rewarding and life-altering and painful in equal measure, I cannot imagine my life without my boys, but there are moments where my old pre-mother self creeps in and I miss her. What to say about this experience that hasn’t been said before?

Never stop posting. She says as she posts for the first time since August. Happy belated New Year, friends! How is everyone doing? Anyone else spend the last two months dealing with this winter's flu and virus onslaught??
