Birthdays can be tough and confrontational, a reminder of where you are and want to be, especially after mourning my cousin yesterday. But also a reminder that you’re still here fighting and a test of strength, courage and wisdom (shout out India Arie).

I like to be real. It’s been a trying time in a trying year - lots of growing pains, grief and wounds, with healing that seems to be oh so slow😅 - and my love for amapiano has taken me through. I’ll spare you evidence of the above, but experience some joys on me birth as I continue to rebirth. Thank you for all the love ❤️

Ok, so I definitely was shouting like Ms. Davido here 😅 but it was well worth it. This is like 10% of the enjoyment that @afronation provided and I didn’t even make it to see the whole festival! Ghana in Detty Dizemba? 🤭👀

Serving you androgyny? Is it ‘unladylike?’ 👀 perfecto. I LOVE THESE.

I posted these photos separately because they serve a deeper meaning. Internalised misogyny and adhering to the ‘male gaze’ are yet other concepts that add to the list of oppressive conditioning that I have been stripping away this 2021.

I used to be confused by how I was meant to ‘present’. I used to be teased (mostly by girls) for elements of being masculine. Nowadays I accept, love and embrace the masculine part of me and the feminine part.

There will be many people who read this and are confused or think it’s not that deep, but meh. There have been ppls who have been confused as to my gender presentation. But I think that’s perfectly okay. We, as humans, want things to be super clear cut but everything in life is messy. We exist in the grey. Gender expectations are so confusing and very restricting. Especially for men, which is why I LOVE the hashtag #blackboyjoy

We do so much conforming and masking, AND get caught up in labels, that we lose sight of simply ‘be’ing. It’s a brave, difficult action that I CHOOSE to do moment-to-moment but life is so much more freeing when I’ve just embraced myself.

It’s not something that is taught, there is a lot of shame that exists in our cultures to be different and I continuously remind myself that I will not be everyone’s cup of tea #NotToEveryonesTaste.

So I publicly endeavour to in 2022: Whatever feels authentic and real to me at the time I’m gonna do… whether that’s clothing/actions/words and I urge you to JOIN ME.

What would it look like for you if you dared to do something radical? Dared not to care?
