It’s almost been a month, and I think I’m ready to talk about it. Last month, two days after my birthday, my dad passed away on September 9th at 11:22 PM.

I saw him one last time before he passed that day, and I wrote on the board, “just keep breathing” I got the call later that night while I was working. I was devastated— to say the least.

If anyone has seen me and I seemed “off”, this is why. I’ve been trying to pretend everything‘s okay, but I’ve come to realize that it’s okay for everything to not be okay.

I’m no stranger to grief. When I was 14 my last grandparent (the only grandparent I ever really remember knowing) passed away. A year later, I lost my second oldest brother. This one just hits different. It’s a different type of grief I have to navigate.

My dad wasn’t around a lot in my life. I sadly don’t have a ton of memories with him, but what I will always remember is how much he loved me and my siblings. He was so proud of me, and anything I ever put my mind to. He loved grabbing my arms because of how much muscle I had on them. The look in his eye when I would explain what I was doing in college or professionally was nothing but admiration, pride and most importantly, love.

It was hard having to watch my father—for years—not be able to breathe fully or finish an entire meal. I have been prepping myself for this day to come, but I still wasn’t ready. Nothing can prepare you. I’m just glad that no matter what bullshit he was going through or what was ailing him, he was still him. Unapologetically him.

My friends that have met him, told me that I get my humor from him, and I’m very glad I get to keep that aspect of him in me.

If you’ve read this far, thank you. I also want to thank everybody in my life that has made this difficult time worth living. You have all helped me keep going even if you didn’t know what I was going through. I’m so very thankful for the people in my life, the individuals that will sit there with me for an hour and a half while I sat with his body. They were there just to be there. To make sure I was okay. I can never repay you all, but I will continue to live because of you.
