It’s Brad’s 60th birthday today.

Brad introduced me to snowmobiling, the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. He’s been supporting my snowmobiling journey, coming out with me 30-50 days every season when he doesn’t even like snowmobiling that much. He makes this incredible dual life I’m living possible: part Vancouver, part middle-of-nowhere, 5 minutes from Alaska, with frequent travel in between.

He complains a lot but he is also my most dedicated, most enthusiastic supporter. He’s always there, always enabling the next adventure, always showing me experiences I would not have had otherwise. For all that you do to make my life more awesome - thank you!

If you have a way to communicate him, please wish him a happy birthday - he’s not on social media.

@fabriquestgeorge is a wine lounge that makes great natural wine onsite, in these giant clay pots. They are spacious, have a nice, warm, living room vibe, and get super nice natural light.

I went on an evening that @tomokotahara happened to be doing a pop up, serving creative, delicate, beautiful vegan food (yes all the food in the reel is vegan!) that paired well with the awesome skin contact wine there.

Her dishes were, in the order of appearance:

Tartlettes of cultured almond & salted black currants, kumquat

Sesame leaf tempura crackers w/ quince sauce

Lily sprouts

Skewers of king oyster mushroom dumplings & leeks, house tare-glaze, pickles

Roasted vegetables & edamame hummus

Warmer flat bread w/ smokey butter

Chocolate mousse w/ arare rice puffs & blueberry coulis

Meet me for a glass of orange wine and some cheese here when I’m in town.

I don’t like bread all that much [compared to rice and noodles] so never got into banh mi, but this trip to Vancouver I ate a lot of it. Found a few awesome places, but this one stuck with me because I ate almost the whole sandwich before I could start driving it was so good, even though I set myself all up for eating and driving mode. Giant delicious lemongrass pork banh mi for only $8.

So lucky to be able to spend a good chunk of my life in Vancouver, where there is so much damn good food. Comment your favorite banh mi spot in Vancouver or anywhere else and your favorite order from there, so I can go check it out. Thanks to @indiscriminateeater and @macleanshaun for this particular rec.

うちから車で20分ぐらいのアラスカサイドの、小さなグリズリー観覧施設にて。入場料は大人1人US$15で、子供は無料。木製の少し背の高い観察用歩道みたいなものが川沿いにあって、一応ショットガンを持った人が万一の時のためにスタンバイしている。グリズリーは木を登るのがとても得意な熊種なので人間がいる所までなんか簡単に登れるけど、サーモンに夢中なので人間がよほどバカなことをしない限りは登って来たりはしないはず。

グリズリーは北海道のヒグマに近い熊で、一般的な寿命は25年ほど。この男の子は6歳ぐらい。熊は縄張りという概念がある動物なので一つのエリアにそんなに沢山はいなく、この川ではここ50年で6匹ほどのグリズリーがサーモンを食べている姿を沢山の人が観察してきているらしい。動物園で熊を見るのとは当たり前だけど全く違うので、人口100人にも満たない小さな町でこんな施設を運営してててありがたい！
