N#1 Berimbau — First Video Release

~ Miniaturas Sonoras ~ is a mini-EP of short musical pieces in which Brazilian percussionist and multi-instrumentalist *Thiago Trad*, based in Brooklyn, NY, presents part of his research with ancestral instruments from Afro-Brazilian culture in dialogue with synthesizers and electronic effects, creating bridges between tradition and the contemporary.

Inspired by icons of world percussion such as Naná Vasconcelos, Dinho Nascimento, Airto Moreira, Papete, and Mestre Lorimbau, Trad explores new sonic territories through the berimbau.

Using a glass cup as a slide and incorporating delay effects, he expands the technical and expressive possibilities of the instrument. With an experimental and minimalist approach, Trad turns his attention to the berimbau—an instrument traditionally associated with capoeira—revealing a sound that echoes the deep roots of the blues and the timbre of an electric guitar.

The result highlights the remarkable versatility and expressive power of the berimbau: an ancestral instrument made of just a single string, capable of resonating within contemporary sonic landscapes.

Nanny Assis: AfroJobim with @roncarterbassist

The @afrojobim project premiered on February 24 at the legendary Dizzy’s Club in New York — a celebration of the Afro-Brazilian roots interwoven in the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim.

I feel deeply honored to share the stage with musical references who have shaped my journey. Premiering this project at one of the world’s most respected jazz institutions was, at once, a privilege and a great responsibility.

Salute to Nanny Assis, the creator of the project, and my gratitude for the invitation.

🪘✨

Bora, Lula!🪘🇧🇷 by @thiagotrad

Today I had the pleasure of sharing a little bit of the world of caxixis with an amazing group of students at Borough of Manhattan Community College (CUNY), through the World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department.

A special thank you to Dr. Laurie Lomask, Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese, for the invitation, the warm welcome, and for creating this space for an exchange between music, culture, and learning.

It was also a great pleasure to share the class with Angelita Sorlano, whose presence and collaboration made the experience even richer.

And my sincere thanks to Fernando Saci for his trust and for creating bridges that allow Brazilian music to continue finding new spaces and new listeners here in New York.

For me, presenting the caxixi is about much more than talking about an instrument. It is about sharing a history, a sound, a way of creating rhythm, and, above all, a way of connecting with music and with one another.

Thank you to all the students for your openness, curiosity, and energy!

May the sounds of the caxixis continue to travel. 🌿🥁 by @thiagotrad

BEX GROOVE LAB 🪘📍

In this special Bahia Experimental Lab, we’ll explore how rhythms from Bahia can be built collectively, transformed through improvisation, and connected with other cultures and artistic expressions.
This edition brings together two musicians with very different musical journeys — connected by rhythm.

Thiago Trad is a Brazilian percussionist, composer, educator and researcher, and the creator of Bahia Experimental. His practice connects Afro-Brazilian rhythmic traditions with improvisation, jazz, experimental music and collective creation. His BEX methodology uses rhythm as a starting point for deep listening, interaction and spontaneous composition.

Marivaldo dos Santos is a Brazilian percussionist, composer, educator and performer from Salvador, Bahia, who has been based in New York for decades. He is globally recognized for his longtime work with STOMP. He is also the creator of Quabales, a project that brings together Bahian percussion, performance and creative work with young people in Salvador.

For this Lab, their different paths meet in the same space:
Bahia → New York
Rhythm → Movement
Tradition → Experimentation
Listening → Collective Creation
We’ll work with pulse, rhythmic cells, layers, repetition, call & response and improvisation — discovering how a rhythm can change when we listen to one another and create together.

BAHIA COLLECTIVE — ESTREIA EM WASHINGTON, D.C.

A Bahia chega a Washington, D.C.!

BAHIA COLLECTIVE — DEBUT IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

Bahia is coming to Washington, D.C.!

Bahia Collective makes its debut in the nation’s capital, bringing the power, ancestry, and magic of Bahia’s drums to a special series of live performances.
Featuring Marivaldo Santos, Dendê Macedo, Marcos Costa, Thiago Trad, and Fernando Saci, the collective brings together different musical backgrounds and perspectives in an experience rooted in rhythm, deep listening, and collective creation.

The repertoire draws from classics of Brazilian popular music, blending familiar songs with the energy of Afro-Brazilian rhythms and, of course, plenty of percussive improvisation — making every performance a unique experience.

More than a concert, Bahia Collective is a meeting point between tradition and contemporary creation, memory and invention.
