Today we are sharing one of five detailed case studies in the Lost and Found magazine - a collection of stories, interviews, collages, poems, and case studies exploring leadership transition.

The Resource Centre for Women and Girls share their particular experience of intergenerational handover, and what stepping up and back looks like in leadership transition:

“I felt in my own journey that leadership does not just happen coincidentally… I've always felt the chance for women increases if we are intentionally brought to and taught leadership because we don't have the advantage of everyone thinking we're leaders the way that men usually do that.” - Zeedah Meierhofer-Mangeli, Founding Director

“Despite very early on, despite doing all these processes and practising leadership, when the question was posed to me, I still did not see myself as a leader, despite doing all the things that leaders within organisations do, you know? What remained was inner work—building that confidence and reaffirming myself.” -Nyawira Wahito, Current Director

Based on their stories and reflections, we pulled 8 practical lessons for organisations transitioning to younger leadership. Read them in the slides.

Earlier this year we launched Lost And Found In Transition - a magazine that collected experiences, reflections, case studies, poems, and collages on feminist leadership transition.

No one leadership transition is the same. Each has its own set of circumstances, relationships, dynamics and realities. It is not just a structural process, but also a human experience.

These quotes from the section "Personal Journeys: Experiences in Leadership", with reflections offered by Lisa VeneKlasen. This section explores how leaders navigate the waves of transition—from the grief of separation to the challenge of identity reconstruction and the search for new purpose.

✊🏾 From Bangladesh to Nepal, Peru to Morocco, Kenya to Madagascar, in every corner of the world, girl- and youth-led movements are taking to the streets, calling out corruption, demanding accountability, and pushing for systems change beyond failed political leaders. While we are seeing a spike in protests from Gen-Z hitting the mainstream media, this is not a new phenomena. For millennia, students and young people have toppled authoritarian regimes, illuminated failed governance, and organized in their communities to demand change.

🙏🏾 At a time when trust in institutions across the globe is at an all time low and we face some of the greatest challenges of our times, from the climate crisis to rising inequality and pervasive conflict and war, young feminist- and youth-led movements give us hope and an opportunity to reimagine our futures.

✍🏼 Vinita Sahasranaman, Co-lead, @uaf_anp and Ruby Johnson, Director, @globalresiliencefund @wearepurposeful_org / Co-Founder, @think.closer write about why funders and decision makers must show up and fund them to win!

The Lost and Found in Transition Magazine is now available!

This magazine is a collection of experiences, reflections, case studies, poems, and collages on feminist leadership transition, grounded in the current context of polycrisis, shrinking civic space, and major shifts in funding for human rights.

It comes out of a studio focused on collective knowledge, ‘brave spaces,’ and accompaniment for feminist leaders in moments of personal and professional transition.

Our intention is to learn, reflect and offer guidance for leadership transition that centers belonging and a much-needed mutual support network for leaders who have recently stepped out. We also aim to contribute to the field of organisational change with feminist innovations that are sensitive to power, justice, and care.

Publication authors include:
Swatee Deepak, Devi Leiper O’Malley, Ruby Johnson,
Lisa VeneKlasen, Hope Chigudu, Theo Sawa, Emilienne de Leon, and Pamela Schifman.

And contributors: Shereen Essof - JASS, Alex Garita, and Laila Alodaat - Prospera, Nyawira Wahito and Zeedah Meierhofer-Mangeli - Resource Center for Women and Girls, Lusine Kosakyan - Frontline Youth Network, Georgia Booth, and Christy Alves Nascimento

Here is our second article on Coaching Co-Leaders: Lessons in Somatic Co-Leadership with Young Feminists by Dani Prisacariu (they/them)

Dani shares their experience leading a Co-Leadership Coaching Circle with young feminist activists from across continents. Together they:

🤚Practiced centering and other somatic practices;
🌱 Explored how leadership has been shaped—by family, systems, trauma, and movement culture
🌸 Named longings and commitments;
🌀 Learned to listen through the body.

Outside the sessions, participants continued practicing, noticing, and reflecting. But as Dani shared "the magic happened in relationship: witnessing one another’s truths and breakthroughs."

Also, Dani generously offers a free Guided Centering Practice in audio to those leaders looking for a simple way to pause throughout the week and re-center. Listen/download the practice and read the full article (linkinbio) by @think.closer

🌊 New Publication Launching 🌊

In this time of polycrisis and rupture, incessant precariousness and change marks our day to day. Leadership transitions have particular resonance and meaning in this context as leaders and organizations assess how to build resilience and bolster their ability to respond in fast-changing waters. This requires imagination, courage and coming together to reflect on what leadership in this time looks like.

Join us for the launch of Lost and Found in Transitions - a collection of experiences, reflections, case studies, poems, and collages on feminist leadership transitions grounded in the current context.

As the world is currently grappling with the rise and impact of authoritarian leadership, we must remember to celebrate other leadership styles that pursue and emphasize inclusivity, equity, and collaboration. Furthermore, we need to consider the ways we can support and strengthen these styles as part of the larger goal of building for a more just future. One of these styles is co-leadership.

Given this is a distinct leadership style, it benefits from a distinct coaching approach. In 2022, we launched an experimental program to offer coaching specifically for co-leads committed to collaborative leadership practices.

Naomi Saelens, Steph de Wolfe, Dani Prisacariu, and Amanda Gigler agreed to be a part of this experiment, bringing their coaching expertise, interest in co-leadership, and commitment to feminism, care, social justice, and liberatory practices to the program.

Read the first of two articles that share the coaches’ reflections about co-leadership and the coaching experience. Check closerthanyouthink.co/journal or link in bio and stories.

🌳What if philanthropy operated like a collaborative ecosystem rather than a competitive marketplace?

NEW on the CEP blog, Devi Leiper O'Malley, Ruby Johnson, and Swatee Deepak of Closer Than You Think challenge the sector’s default to competition and scarcity thinking. Drawing from nature and their own collaborative journey funding girl- and young feminist-led movements, they make a case for "solidarity leadership."
