GPS* summer flashback June 4-11, 2026 Newark + Upstate NY Newark (public & closed programs + bts rehearsals). Grateful to Alex Chang @alexachang2000 + GPS* @gps.lab & all for the unforgettable sessions.
……

The Global Performance + Sound Lab [GPS*] is an inter-institutional collaboration that is a growing network and resource that can help to manifest new work, performances, research, scholarship, pedagogies, connections, and knowledge and practice sharing among those in these constantly developing interdisciplinary fields.

GPS* 2026
HUMAN + COMPUTER RELATIONS
Newark + Upstate NY

GPS* advances interdisciplinary collaboration across art, computer design, music and sound studies, embodied performance, curatorial studies, global urban studies, American studies, history, and eco-art/environmental humanities. Within the theme of human–computer relations, areas of inquiry include mapping, immersive and interactive technologies, cybernetics, and AI, approached through critically engaged, theory- and practice-based research.

The Newark portion will convene Rutgers faculty and graduate students alongside international collaborators for a working session focused on future planning. This will be followed by a series of site-based engagements in Upstate New York, including studio time/work and practice-based sessions exploring human–computer relations alongside embodied, affective, and cultural histories, ritual, healing, and artistic practice. The convening is oriented toward developing practice-based research methods, curricula, and collaborative frameworks.

25 years ago today set off so many chains of response that we are still living with – environmental, political, technological, artistic— in our bodies, in our society. I quickly began doing these impromptu public performances under the banner “our grief is not a cry for war”. These photos are from the @chashama_ window on 42nd St. I also performed in Union Square, at Penn Station, and at the firemen’s memorial on 100th St. The most memorable for me was Union Square where random passersby sat down on the ground to watch and I newly understood the meaning of public space in an embodied way. by @thinkdance

Listening to Simon Pare-Poupart talking with anthropologist Robin Nagle about his decades as a sanitation worker in Montreal. Fascinating, controversial, human, and necessary. As a Board member of the Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board (@manhattan_swab ) I’m thrilled to see so many people out for this talk about trash that we have organized! Check out Simon’s book TRASH and recent article in Harpers. https://harpers.org/archive/2026/06/the-conscience-of-the-city-simon-pare-poupart-garbage-man-montreal/ taken in New York Society for Ethical Culture by @thinkdance

What a rich & inspiring visit to @jacobspillow with @s.danicole — the nostalgia of seeing where I danced one summer long ago, the excitement of the new Doris Duke Theatre with its Indigenous Garden and multiple projects engaging with the Mohican history of the land, the inimitable Dianne McIntyre, a fabulous performance by Hubbard St, and the chance to collect soil for the Go Between project from this site, significant to colonial history, the Underground Railroad, and American modern dance. Feeling very grateful. taken in Jacob's Pillow by @thinkdance

This is marine clay! Research for my project Go Between. This whole field, and much more, used to be submerged— under the large lake called the Haarlemmermeer in North Holland. It was “reclaimed” or drained to create polderland, as land has been in many parts of the Netherlands. This draining was finished in 1852, exposing land of peat & clay for farming. Super complicated ecologically & politically given carbon emissions, flood liabilities, other costs to the ecosystems, and the sheer anthropocentrism of it all. I was in a village in the south of the polder where the land is marine clay— incredibly dry right now. There are even mussel shells in the soil! by @thinkdance
