A brain-dump of words, in my mother tongue of Farsi, that point to the feelings, thoughts, and realities that have arisen in me throughout the past weeks as I have witnessed Iran’s courageous and beautiful people stand up for themselves in face of oppression, and then get brutally slaughtered.

For non-Farsi speakers, these words cover themes including grief, anger, rage, despair, hope, anxiety, pride, belonging, community, oppression, and freedom.

Iran’s January/Dey massacres on the ground. A collection of phrases publicly posted by Iranians living in Iran, across various social media platforms, upon managing to connect to the internet for the first time in weeks after living through the January 2026 massacres and crackdowns.

These are just from 21 different people. With death tolls being estimated in the tens of thousands, there are sure to be a hundred thousand other similar stories and sentiments, as well as different ones, which might never be heard.

I think religion should be a personal connection and choice, not a political system by force. Growing up in Iran under the current regime, I never had a choice in my religion - it was expected as a default that I was Muslim. I was told that I am one by my school; that if I cried while hitting my chest with a metal chain during the month of Muharram, especially Ashura, I would be cleansed of my sins (I was 7 years old); that playing music loudly in one’s car would mean that one’s behaving against God, and would result in the religious police stopping your car and ripping your speakers with a knife; that women who showed their skin or hair in public deserved shame or even death. Not only I was told and shown these things - everyone around me was too. The intense fears and dillusions these forced beliefs caused were multi-generational, societal, and paralysing. People, terrified of the consequences, policed each other on these things. Movies that showed realities outside of these were banned. If you were an activist, artist, or even normal person who acted outside of these conventions, or stood up for a different, more free way of life or practicing your religion, you could disappear into a jail and be tortured to death. And all of this was done in the name of God - the tyrants in power said so.

It was years after I left Iran, after an initial, reactionary atheistic phase, that I realised that what religion is about, what it points to, is something to be felt personally. God is found through the heart, inside oneself. The reflection of God is seen in every person, living being, and thing in the universe. When in touch with God - the essence that unifies all things and is beyond description - one feels infinite, eternal, compassionate, forgiving, merciful, and... all the other names of God that religions give. God is personal, deeply intimate, vulnerable. Connection with God cannot be forced onto someone externally - it’s like trying to force someone to earn the blood that’s running through their veins.
