It’s not always about more light. It’s about better light.

A subtle change in quality and direction completely transforms how this artwork is seen — revealing a perception of the artwork that was almost lost before.
A simple demonstration of just how much considered lighting can change a space.

In 2024 we bought the conversation around lighting and technology to @designcentraluk and bought a taster of what we were building at our experiential studio in Cheshire, that now hosts weekly CPDs for Interior Designers and Architects.

Have you been to our studio yet? If so let us know what you thought in the comments👇 Thank you 🙏

Today we visited Design Central to support the show, which is amazing - such a great vibe - and great to catch up with so many of you including @emmiebinteriors @avaroseinteriors @thespacemaker_interiors @lewisknox_ @fionawdesign @studiodimorauk @astrolighting @hannahbarnesdesigns @lisa.raynes

💡 Top Tip / Make sure you make a visit to the fabulous @larsenarchitecture_ stand where you can win a private cinema experience with us at The SONA Studio 🍿

Really enjoyed @lewisknox_ talk today which will be on @interiordesignbusinesspod in a few weeks - that’s defo worth a listen 🎧 if you didn’t catch it today! Sadly I missed some other great talks from our friends as I had to shoot off @thespacemaker_interiors @_txtured_

We sadly aren’t exhibiting or speaking at the show this year, but today had so many lovely messages from many of you who wanted to talk further with us as but didn’t get a proper chance, so if that’s you and you’ve still not been to our studio for an experiential CPD - Please do DM me and we’d love to have you 🤗

Well done Cath, Duncan & Team on another successful show.

CABLE DROP ✅ completed on our new London site with @designbyuber

Sometimes people don’t realise that we are involved really early in our projects but we are powering everything in it.

We are responsible for providing the infrastructure that is going to support all the technology that goes in to our projects; and sometimes these projects are like small hotels, housings tens of thousands of technological components all relying on the infrastructure.

WiFi is simply never adequate in a luxury home in our opinion, unless you want to risk infuriating performance - proper infrastructure is required. So we visit site to brief the electricians we’re working alongside, provide infrastructure drawings and undertake a walk through of the property to ensure clarity. Let’s face it guys, there’s some things AI just can’t do 😉

By this point it’s always ideal if the client has signed off lighting layouts and schedules as changes to fittings, quantities or loads can affect the electrical design and power requirements, as well as final positioning.

Even where clients have decided against things like automated shades etc, we’ll always recommend to pre-wire in case you ever change your mind.

For this project we will be using INVISIBLE speakers (if you’ve visited the studio you’ll know how amazing these sound!!!!) It’s important on this project therefore as usual that we work closely with the onsite team to confirm locations / positions EARLY as these need fitting before boarding starts.

This is just the early stages of this project but you can see how much communication is required, working with site in our area of expertise, and how decisions need to be locked down early on to avoid inefficiency, added costs, delays and frustration as the project moves forward.

So we’re busy getting all this in place, alongside the other 13 live projects we have right now and already getting booked up to Christmas 😮‍💨

If you have a project coming up in 2027 it is never too early to start the conversation with us. Book in to the studio so you can literally see, hear and feel whats possible.

For @thinksona Cheshire experience centre, @lewisknox_ were asked to create a space that felt immersive, welcoming and atmospheric – somewhere clients could experience integrated technology within a carefully designed interior, rather than a traditional showroom environment.

From the beginning, the ambition was to move away from the feel of a typical technology showroom. Instead of obvious displays and demonstrations, the space was designed to feel closer to a home, allowing lighting, sound and automation to be experienced more naturally and comfortably.

Everyone wants to know what’s the difference and which is better, Lutron or Crestron.

Most of the what gets written online comes from those who only sell one or the other, that’s not an honest comparison, it’s a sales pitch wearing a review!

We install both, have done for over 20 years. The truth is the performance difference is close to nothing, and the real decision comes down to keypad feel, scope of a project and warranty preference.

14 years.

Simon started SONA with no plan. No marketing. No grand vision. Just a guy who loved what he did and believed he could do it better.

I came along later. I’m not good without a plan, so I helped him find the vision, refine his brand and then once I saw the potential I couldn’t step away. And then we just kept going. Kept pushing. Kept trying to be the best.

Fourteen years later that still hasn’t changed even though a lot of other things are now different.

We’ve been through the hard times. The times when life got heavy and the business felt it (because your business is always a reflection of you). There have been moments when we wanted to quit for sure.

What kept us going? Honestly, our clients and partners. Every single one of them who believed in us enough to give us a chance. And of course our fabulous team 🙌 who ARE SONA. Who showed up for us through thick and thin. Who care genuinely about what we do.

As for Simon and I, chalk and cheese doesn’t cover it but as the business has grown, so have we. He’s helped me find more of my own confidence in an industry I knew nothing about. I’ve helped him own his talent and build his passion in to a brand. We’ve propped each other up when the other was falling and pulled each other forward when one of us wanted to stop. Largely without knowing what we were doing if we’re honest!! A bit like parenting where we tend to use the same strategy 😂

We wouldn’t change a single year of it. Thanks for being part of the last 14 years.
Here’s to whatever comes next. 🥂

We often meet people who’ve had a bad experience with lighting control. They think it makes life more complicated. They think it’s not worth it. They’ve spent the money and been left with something that confused them, frustrated them, or simply never worked the way anyone promised it would.

We get it. Completely. 💯

What we will tell people over and over is that Lighting control itself was never the problem.

We’ll use a Chef 👩‍🍳 Analogy

Think of it like truffle. One of the most extraordinary ingredients in the world. But you don’t just stick it on a plate. It requires knowledge. Restraint. Experience. Finesse. Preparation. Skill. All of those things working together to make it what it can actually be.

In the wrong hands it’s a waste. A very expensive and disappointing waste. Just like lighting control.

In the right hands it’s transformative and you’ll never want to live without it. You’ll feel disappointed when faced with a normal light switch or dimmer.

Right now we’re working with three clients who have existing control systems that were installed by someone else. All three of them came to us untrusting. Understandably so. And all three of them - because of how we work and how we talk about what we do - gave us the opportunity to show them what it SHOULD have been from the beginning.
.
And let’s not forget about the support afterwards for your system, and changes for lighting scenes. We include all that but we’ll save that for another post. The truffle analogy doesn’t quite stretch that far. 😂

Anyway, if you’re planning a reno or new home and think lighting control isn’t needed (but you’re investing in quality interiors and lighting) PLEASE come and chat to us so at least if you decide NOT to have it, you decided with full knowledge of what it’s capable of.

We created the SONA Studio for that very reason. To empower homeowners to make informed decisions before spending a penny. Book a tour at the link in bio and we’d love to show you our little world ☕️

Is lighting control really just an expensive light switch? Or should lighting control be an important conversation to have when you are investing in any kind of lighting scheme or design?

We hear this. And honestly, if a lighting control system has been installed without any design behind it, without conversations with the homeowner, without any scenes programmed, without any thought to how you actually live in that space?

Then yes. That’s exactly what it is. An expensive light switch.

We’ve walked into homes where a Lutron lighting system was installed for example - one of the best lighting control systems in the world - and the keypads were never engraved for the client. The scenes were never programmed. The client was handed an app on completion day and told they could program it themselves. Whilst we’re all for empowering clients, this does not feel like luxury to us.

That’s not what we mean when we talk about lighting control at SONA.

Instead imagine the lights in your kitchen gradually brightening as you come downstairs in the morning to the perfect curated scene that makes you feel supported. It’s your living room shifting from bright and energising at midday to warm and low as dusk falls helping you to relax - without anyone touching a switch.

It’s dimming capability that sets your bedroom lights at ten percent and the automated shades drawn when you walk in at night so your body already knows it’s time to wind down. It’s every light in the house going off and every blind closing when you press “sleep”.

SONA lighting control is the difference between a house that has lights and a home where the lighting has been designed.
It’s one of the most transformative things you can put in a luxury home and it’s still getting overlooked because people don’t understand it. Relatively speaking it’s actually one of the most cost effective elements given what it delivers every single day in every space, at all hours.

The question isn’t whether you need lighting control.
It’s finding a partner who can leverage its worth. Come and experience how it feels for yourself.
