I have tried Barrel Rider for years... It's not far from where I have lived in Marshall, but life, injuries, weakness, and weather have thwarted me until today.

I got up around 06:00 to be the first truck in the parking lot. Then I had a lovely conversation with the park ranger before I made the trek up hill.

Somehow I did the crux on my first warm up try today 🤯 It took a couple ground rips to settle down and
🔓lock in🔒

Luckily UZI takes me there 😤

After I sent, I decided to get another angle with the 🐟 👁️ only to surprise myself with lap no ✌️

Huge shout out to @peakfitcoaching for helping me recover from my biggest injury. I would not be here without her. We set this boulder as a goal last winter, and it took longer than expected... sometimes that is how things go. And that's ok.

Also, shouts to my wife @paigewit. Unfortunately, we have to be away from each other for the month of March, but I feel her support always 🫶

▪️
Somebody pinch me 🤏 Still in disbelief of this day. It all started waking up to our cold cottage with an achy body. @mattiasbmclimbs and I went to the farm stall for coffee and to warm our bodies by the fire. After thawing out, we met up with @ethan_pringle to try the new mega 'Into the Void' which I somehow managed in just a few attempts. Raw power and coordination were accessible to me. I was in the right place at the right time doing the right thing. With this sentiment encompassing my mind, I could feel 'Sky' pulling me to her. In a bout of urgency, I asked Mattias to drop me at the car park before he got lunch. I hiked in alone with a few pads, pulled on my block for thirty seconds, and then sent first shot 🤯

'Sky' is probably more than half the reason I came back to Rocklands this year. A sequence of just a few perfect moves that is improbable to perform. Rarely can I stick the first move with my foot still on, and rarer still to do the second jump. To do both with such little perceived effort boggles my mind. Especially in the context of a lack of proper training due to injuries leading up to the trip. I am proud to have listened to the moment and seized it, and I am grateful to be in this amazing place with amazing people to share it with 🙏

An amazing @mattiasbmclimbs and @boulderbushido FA that was hidden in plain sight. This climb kicked off the best day of climbing of my entire life! @ethan_pringle set up a top rope while I set up the pads, and I was waffling between rehearsing on rope or giving it a proper flash burn. Mattias convinced me the pads were bomber 🔥 so I went for it ground up. Four tries later I was standing on top!

The grade is hard to calculate because it really is all good holds and it is the distance, fear and back to back nature of the moves that causes the difficulty. Felt similar to the other V13 jumps I've done in the last week so we can stick to that until more people weigh in. Regardless this is one of my favorite climbs I've ever done ✅

What is going on with bouldering?

While we were in 🇨🇭, @apurdy97 and I had amazing conversations between tries, on long drives to magic wood to escape the 🌧️, and back at our place while he was trying to hold down his big boy Google gig 🧑‍💻. Out of this time I worked (obsessively) on trying to unpack big questions:
▪️Who is or has been an elite boulderer?
▪️What goes into making that assessment?
▪️How should we measure eliteness in our bouldering?
▪️Is the sport progressing? Or are climbers just changing their behavior?

Climbing has a lot of talking heads who make big claims about the state of climbing at large without much teeth to their arguments (imo).

In response, I applied modern data analysis, statistics, and mathematics. While my methods are probably insufficient for a formal publication at this time, I do believe that I can share what I found in good conscience.

☀️It was TOO nice outside☀️

I woke up, put on a collared shirt, started walking to the office, and I didn't make it very far 😅 It's rare to get a day like today in NÖ, so I pulled the trigger and took the 🚆 back out there... And I still got good math done on the train! Public transit is ELITE!

I was still pretty tired from last night's training session, but I still had an amazing time and there was a great crew out at the boulders!

I ended the day with a more rarely done alternate ending to a boulder I had done previously, "Weekly P**** Dose" 8a. This version felt like a step up from the original...

Excellent day out with 🥰 @paigewit 🥰 in NÖ.

Truly a blessing to have a partner who will brave winter ❄️ bouldering conditions on her day off.

It was interesting to take the public transit the whole way to the crag. Honestly, not driving makes the commute so relaxing. The 🚌 bus/train 🚂 only runs on the hour, so we had to be on it to come back on time, but I think it was worth it.

Also, climbing hard in 90% humidity 💦 apparently is totally fine on this rock which is absurd 🤣 I felt like we were in a cloud 🌨️ the whole day. In any case, I sent the mini proj and a bonus rig, Paige got on some choice moves, and she also got a long run 🏃 in along the Danube.

30 Trips Around ☀️

I decided to treat myself to a day off on my birthday and check out a local Vienna climbing area. My new friend Bernd who I met at the wonderful @bouldermonkeys.at gym showed me around. The day was quite cold, and I felt quite sore from a weekend in Maltatal. To my amazement, I was able to do all the boulders I tried!

This is definitely my best day since I injured my 🦵 in 2024 and many of the problem required intense right heel hooks and questionable landings. Both of these factors would have been a no go even a few months ago. I definitely feel like I have turned a corner and "knock on wood" have years of climbing ahead!
