Over the last few weeks, The Pain Cave changed direction.↪️

That’s what I love about the collaboration process. You spend so much time gathering material – conversations, memories, notes, fragments from someone’s life. 🧩

And at first you think you’re shaping the story, planning chapters.
Then eventually the material starts speaking back. Maybe I finally stopped trying to steer it. I wasn’t listening to it. 👂

You get deep enough into it and patterns start appearing. Certain moments keep resurfacing. Certain questions won’t leave you alone. Slowly, the story begins telling you what it actually wants to be. And that’s when I can go in and ask about what it’s telling me. The detail interviews.

Like trying to finish the Arctic Spine, there are blind spots, difficult terrain to navigate, thin ice, fatigue, restless sleep. The late nights alone, talking to yourself, questioning your sanity while trying to piece it all together – then it clears. The finish line comes into view.🏁

That’s where the magic happens. Luckily for me, this happens. It always does. When you stop trying to find it, it comes into view… somehow. ✍️

At first glance, The Pain Cave could be a book about endurance running. Extreme races. Jungles, deserts, mountains.🌄

But the more conversations we’ve had, the more we’ve realised the races are becoming the vehicle, not the point of the book. They’re the thing carrying Jon’s story. 📖

For me, the interesting questions are not around the races Jon has survived.
They’re around why he keeps needing to push further. 🏃 by @third_iteration

I first met Simon about 21 years ago. Our paths have crossed several times since, as we've both been doing our own thing – writing, creating, media'ing.

It’s great to be working with him on Gareth’s book and to see his writing career take off in another direction.

This is the first writer collaboration for Third Iteration and it's exciting to see it take shape.

As a part-time adventurer, I sometimes struggle.

Sitting in front of a monitor 24/7 and writing about the outdoors.

I need to get in amongst it and live it. If I’m working with a crazy runner like @jon_shield_runs_ultras or someone like @silverbacktarzan who lives for nature.

It gives time to think. And that’s where the creativity comes from.

When I’m breathing heavy and challenging myself - it feeds me.

I need to do more. Make time to see it and feel it.

Writing isn’t always about writing. Publishing is always about ideas.

Let’s go, let’s go…
