A true best friend from childhood who became my sister. That’s who Tara Dombroski is to me. And, since before my daughter was even born, she took on the role of her other parent. Now, to help us, at this incredibly difficult and transformative time, she has organized a fundraising campaign. Once the acoustic nerve is fried and the vestibular nerve is cut, the brain freaks out. It can no longer give you your equilibrium. So you are dizzy all the time while standing. You can’t walk in a straight line. You always feel like you are falling. It also sends out signals as cries of help that are constant phantom noises that you are not really hearing. It’s just your brain desperately trying to make you hearing work again. At night, the brain keeps trying to make you hearing work while you sleep. It plays sounds it has recorded as if they are real. You wake up. Scared and exhausted. You reach for your dog who you have come to count on to let you know which noises are real and which ones are just your brain living in the past.
