Three mediums, one obsession. 🎨

Oil paint builds — layer by layer, day by day. Since 1996,
it's been my most faithful conversation with the canvas.

Watercolor never lies. It moves, it breathes, it surprises
me every time again.

And then there are my quick sketches: pencil, Chinese ink,
no eraser, no regrets. 20 minutes to capture what a camera
never can — the soul of a moment.

Three different rhythms, three different truths — but all
of them are how I see the world. 🖌️

Pen, paper and 20 minutes. That's all I need.

A little stone chapel at the foot of the hill. Red roof, a cross on top, nobody around. So I stood there and drew it.

I call these my quick sketches. Chinese ink, right there on the spot, and then straight away the watercolour goes on. 20 to 30 minutes, no more. No eraser either. What's on the paper stays on the paper.

It's a bit like taking a photo. But slower.
And you remember it better.

They walk with canes now, but their love hasn't aged a day

Posted with The title of this work comes from a song that won the Eurovision Song Contest in Nice back in 1961. It was Jean-Claude Pascal who took first place for Luxembourg with "nous les amoureux".

When I saw this couple walking by in Salzburg, I was immediately moved by the sight of them. My hand instinctively reached for paper. I couldn't help but think: back in 1961, they truly could have been the very "les amoureux" from that song.

Decades have passed since then. Today, they walk through the historic streets of the Altstadt with canes and in oversized clothing. The youthfulness of the past has given way to the fragility of time. Yet, if you look closely, it is still right there: they undeniably remain “les amoureux”. The same quiet connection, the same shared rhythm in their steps.

For me, this is what drawing is truly about. It is about capturing a fleeting moment, a way of living, and leaving behind a small footprint of the human beauty I encounter along the way. by @this.is.evarist

One of my first flower pastels. I had no idea they would lead to so many more.

Green Vase and Geraniums with Bottles, on A3.

Looking at them now I remember exactly where I was sitting, what the light was like, how unfamiliar the pastel sticks still felt in my hand.

There is something honest about a first attempt. No habits yet, no shortcuts, just looking carefully and trying to put down what you see. I think that honesty still shows in these. by @this.is.evarist

How many little white houses fit on one canvas? I stopped counting.

Spanish white village.
Oil on canvas, 70 x 90.

All those houses stacked up the hill, one on top of the other. Red roofs, tiny windows, a green shutter here and there. From far away it looks simple. White. But white is never just white when you paint it. There's blue in it, and pink, and grey where the shadows fall. Every wall a bit different.
It took patience. A lot of it.

1945...I was 8 months old and somebody put me on a table for a photo.

Now I'm 82 and I painted it. In oils.

Green knitted suit with the little buttons. White socks. And that toy dog, I must have loved him because he's in the picture with me. I don't remember any of it of course. But painting it, I spent hours looking at that little face, and something came back anyway.

Strange thing, painting yourself as a baby. You know how the story goes for him. He doesn't.

👉 Would you paint yourself as a baby? Or is that too strange? Tell me below.

More than 80 years later, I'm painting the baby I once was. 👶🎨

I pulled an old baby photo of myself out of the box, and now I'm at the easel painting that little boy in oils. It's a strange feeling to watch yourself appear on the canvas that young, with the green sweater and the white toy dog. Every brushstroke brings back memories I don't even have myself.

The portrait is still very much a work in progress.

👉 Can you still recognise me in this little guy? Tell me in the comments!

Some subjects do not sit still long enough to be painted carefully.

This is one of them.

Flamenco
oil on canvas, 70x90cm.

The red dress was never going to be polite about how much space it took up. The yellow light on the left was a deliberate choice — not because it was there in real life but because the painting needed something to push against. Light against dark, warm against cold, stillness against movement. The dancer does not care about any of that. She is already somewhere else entirely.

Tell me what you feel when you look at this. I am genuinely curious what it brings up.

Every artist has a first time.

This was mine with pastel flowers.

They we're my very first attempt at painting flowers in pastel on A3.

The green vase with spring flowers against a blue wall. The geraniums with old bottles catching the light from a window. I had no idea at the time whether pastel was the right medium for flowers. Turns out it was. The soft edges, the way colour blends directly on the paper, the speed of it — all of it suited flowers in a way I had not expected.

I am still painting flowers in pastel. Some things you try once and never stop.
Is there a subject you discovered later in life that immediately felt right? Tell me in the comments.

White is the hardest colour to paint. So I decided not to paint it at all.

Instead I protected it before the brush ever touched the paper. Masking fluid, a liquid rubber applied to every petal, every highlight, every place where the light had to live. Then the colours came freely, wild and wet, knowing they could not go where they were not invited. When it was all dry I rubbed the rubber away. And there they were. Three daisies in full light against a garden that had gone beautifully dark around them. Watercolour, 45x35cm, 2005.

There is a particular kind of beauty in someone who is completely unaware of being watched.

Joke, pastel on A3.

She is turned away, lost in her own thoughts, her hands quietly folded. The striped top, the earring catching a little light, the silver hair rendered stroke by stroke in charcoal and pastel.

A portrait like this is not about making someone look their best. It is about catching them being real. That is always the more interesting portrait.

Is there someone in your life you would like to see captured exactly like this? Send me a message. A portrait in pastel is one of the most personal and lasting gifts you can give someone.
