Here is an architecture magazine about what it’s like to live in Aotearoa now. Houses, community, art and culture — in print and online.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We’re a bit excited about this one. This issue, ColorCote and Here have teamed up to produce The Outdoor Issue, calling your attention to buildings around the centre of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

On billboards and at bus stops, we’ve captioned buildings of various ages and typologies – turning the city into a kind of three-dimensioned magazine. ‍In doing so, we’re calling attention to buildings you might not be conscious of.

The campaign runs for the duration of this magazine’s time on-sale, until mid-December.

We are delighted to announce the winners of the Here Awards 2026 – which you can see in Here 39, on sale on Monday with three special covers... Collect the set!

We received an incredible number of entries this year, and our winners come from across the motu, representing a wild diversity of budget, approach and design. We love that.

The projects we saw were brave. Clear-eyed. They weren't the obvious solution but they were the most logical and that's what we love about the awards.

Congratulations to @andrewbarrielab for taking out Best House Aotearoa 2026 – and to all our wonderful winners.

BEST HOUSE AOTEAROA 2026

We're delighted to announce our supreme winner of the Here Awards 2026: Oxford Terrace Baptist Church Stage 2, by @andrewbarrielab in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

This modern cloister – and a neighbouring church complex – have replaced a beloved earthquake-damaged building. It includes commercial spaces, along with 11 affordable apartments and terrace houses. Materials are modest, but carefully detailed. The sense of community is joyful, and inspiring.

There are many powerful things about this project but the one that got us most was that half its residents used to live in motels or refugee camps. That they have housing at all is a relief. That they get to live in something as carefully designed and beautifully realised as this can only be described as God's work. Well done Andrew and team.

Our awards issue is on sale Monday 19 October – with three very special covers. Collect the set!

With thanks to our wonderful sponsors @citta, @resenecolour and @blumnz – and thank you to our event partner @collectionbytfehotels and our vehicle partner @polestarnewzealand

DON'T FORGET TO GET TICKETS!

We're looking forward to a VERY special Open Home with @duluxnz – held between Whanganui and Te Papaioea Palmerston North on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October.

That's next weekend!

We're delighted to be joining the inaugural @festivalofdesign_aotearoa with an extra special bonus event, staged over two days and three fantastic buildings that show the diversity of architecture in the region.

First up, on Friday afternoon, we’re visiting the long-forgotten – and recently revived – Hatrick House by Don Wilson. At a time when New Zealand architects were building elegant sheds, Wilson's glamorous American-influenced modernism included generous windows, clear composition and extensive built-in cabinetry.

‍Also on Friday? Te Ruamātatoru by Dalgleish Architects, which featured in issue 32 of Here last year. Built at Whakaniwha, a garden at Pūtiki in Whanganui connected to Ngāti Ruaka hapū, Te Ruamātatoru was inspired by a now-derelict pataka kai – food store house – at Rānana.

And finally, on Saturday morning? Strip Mall by @spacecraftarchitects – winner of the Density award in the 2024 Here Awards. A shining example of what density in a regional centre might look like, it's practical, colourful and fun, using commercial building techniques to striking effect.

Grab your tickets via the link in our profile – and have a look at the wider programme too!

In a paddock west of Lawrence, Otago, Vaughn McQuarrie @vaughnrmcquarrie has created a one-bedroom home with a sense of the unexpected.

It’s not until you’re in the living area that you grasp the enormity of the landscape. The view is long and layered, stretching to Cromwell, the back of The Remarkables, and the east coast.

“It’s essentially a shed because that was what the landscape called for,” he says of the form. While the home is wrapped in galvanised steel, the interior has a softer finish to align with the owners’ request for a “simple, strong, pure and warm home that used natural materials”.

Ceramicist Coralie Winn @winnceramics and weaver Diana Duncan @swampcitybasketry had previously collaborated on teapots with woven handles. “So when the lamp idea came up, I asked if she’d weave a shade,” recalls Winn.

“She’ll look at my surfaces and respond to them, matching the willow tone and woven form to the ceramic base. I love the idea that one day she might make a shade, and I’ll create a base in response.”

Based around Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour, Winn often uses found clay to create her surfaces and glazes. Duncan cultivates willow from coppices, travelling around Canterbury and into the red zone to harvest it.

ARCHITECTURE FOR SALE: 10 NORTHLAND STREET

People often describe a house as having excellent bones, but this one takes the cake. It’s owned by architect Hannah Chiaroni-Clarke of @ccstudio.nz: she bought it from people who had owned the house for 25 years, working with architect Briar Green on a staged renovation that opened the house up to the back garden with a new kitchen-dining extension, followed by an extension containing a new living room, main bedroom and bathroom. It was that rare thing: a villa with everything in the right place.

Chiaroni-Clarke fell in love with its easy flow and clever spaces. Since then, she’s made a series of deft improvements, most notably opening up a wall between the kitchen and a living space to create a dining room, and reorienting the kitchen with a bank of tall cabinetry along the northern wall. She’s updated colours throughout: a rich, warm palette ranging from mustardy brown to navy. Material additions include Tasmanian blackwood, stainless steel and warm laminate.

The combined effect is of a house that feels very much itself – and it's now on the market with @carolinedaniel.kellands. And everything is still in the right place.

Making use of non-conforming timber found on site, the experimental Y-Shelter was built at Summerhill in Pāpāmoa by staff and students from the University of Auckland.

“We developed joint-cutting techniques that employ simple jigs that can be useable on irregular surfaces,” explains creative director Billy Pengelly @billy__pengelly.

“Our goal for this research was lightweight, sustainable structures that expand the possibilities for timber construction. Functionally, the building is a resting place that marks the entrance to the network of forest walking trails.”

Inspired by a daily ritual, Kate Pilot @katepilotdesign has designed a series of objects to hold the things we cherish.

“The concept of having an object that holds your special jewellery, and the act of placing it there every day is a beautiful little gesture. Nothing grand, but still precious and special,” she says.

“There are 99 pieces in the initial run: nine cones of each size in each timber, ebonised pōhutukawa, black maire and puriri. Then six bowls with lid in each timber as well. All are numbered and every piece is unique.”
