Taking skills I’ve gained in the hills and learning to apply them in new mediums has been quite the adventure this year. Had the great fortune of training alongside California and Nevada agency lifesavers last month earning our Advanced Swiftwater Rescue Technician certifications on the American River in California. Lucky enough just to witness this training let alone be a part of it. Gary Hughes from Canyon Keepers was kind enough to snap some photos and send them over. Thanks to our instructor Don and the teams for having me. taken in Coloma, California by @thisismaxwhite

As part of my pre-reqs for my American Mountain Guide Association Apprentice certification I was required to take my first Wilderness First Responder course back in 2019/2020. I enjoyed it so much that years later at the tender age of 41 I went back to school attending an EMT-B program at a university in NYC. Not a career change, just looking to increase that safety cushion I try so hard to build when I’m traveling through the mountains. As a person who struggled with academics growing up, going back to school was stressful enough, adding on top of my regular work/life. There’s all these new definitions that weren’t around when I was a kid like “test anxiety”, “Dyscalculia”, and “Neurodiversity”, I always just thought I sucked. Long story short I figured out ways to study and passed my courses and exams, successfully contributing to the rapid expansion of grey hairs on my head. During my clinical rotations I was lucky enough to have incredible preceptors walk me through some deep waters. Working with and witnessing first hand the sacrifices first responders make in NYC and everywhere for that matter is nothing short of astonishing. Proud to say that in the 6 month process along with passing, I never missed an online lecture or in-person class, even receiving and email from the school “did you just login from Tuscany?” First photo and middle finger by @jamalimaddix who mid-flight summed up the entire process the so beautifully “Bruv, going to University in your 40s is disgusting.” by @thisismaxwhite
