Thursday Artist Spotlight: Parker Donaldson

Parker Donaldson (b. 1988) is a Pittsburgh-based conceptual artist, sculptor, and musician whose work spans sculpture, installation, performance, video, and sculptural portraiture. He earned his BFA in Sculpture from the University of Cape Town and has exhibited internationally, building a practice rooted in observation, structure, and material exploration.

Alongside his studio work, Parker has collaborated as a fabricator with artists including Mary Sibande and Devan Shimoyama. His practice has been recognized with awards such as the C. G. Saker Scholarship, the Simon Gerson Prize, and a Pittsburgh Awesome Grant.

We’re excited to welcome Parker to Sweetwater for Portrait Sculpture CS07, where students will explore the process of building a life-size portrait through clay, structure, and close observation.

Bulumko, 2026

We have been so blessed to have had three years with such an amazing friend and artist living under our roof. Portraits of people I know really well take me so damn long and I really really struggle with finding something I can walk away from and be content with the final product. I hope I capture some of the spark. I tell everyone whose portrait I sculpt to think of their image as a character in a play, it’s not going to be them, but heavily influenced and inspired. I tried. Time is too fast. Aku and I love you so much B. @bu_lumko_

The waste-mold process has been so forgiving.

“Clapter (is the best medicine)” 2024-25

There’s a companion piece titled “Showmance”that I never got around to posting. Though my output has slowed this year, I am so thankful for being able to produce what I can. With Clapter, I wanted the viewer to feel ok with the idea of enjoying a work that is pandering to be desired. This piece wants you to like it. by @thisisparkerdonaldson

It’s never done, but I think I’m happy with stopping the marks here. This piece is to be my first attempt at a plaster waste mold. I could have made it a little easier on myself, we’ll see! Off to mold making!
