Last Sunday, we gathered Indigenous leaders and land defenders with cultural workers and organizers across the city for a resistance concert to assert our collective stance against Carney’s extractivist agenda.

A HUGE miigwetch to Chief Na’moks, Gwii Lok'im Gibuu Jesse Stoeppler and @kanahus.tattoos for opening our space, and providing updates on their territories and land defence struggles.

Miigwetch to our phenomenal lineup of performers @itsfaythofficial, @thisisscribe and @moewilliam who, through their artistry (which included song, spoken word, and dabke), strengthened our collective resolve for the long haul fight.

First time I’m trying a post with bare captions. This one is first because I know I look good, but really, this is a post about ambiguous moments that meant something to me while it was hot out.

Sat here for like 4 hours while my family went away for the night. Missed them, didn’t wanna do anything.

When Patrick asked me to sing the hook he wrote for Billionaires, I had zero hesitation. When I heard room near the end of the beat, I asked if I could throw a verse at the end.

The weight of a dollar sits heavy on my conscience daily. Knowing that there are people hoarding wealth while the majority of the world fights for scraps, knowing the desperation I felt just a year earlier, I vented my frustration into what felt like an incantation.

We’re often pitted against one another, but our focus should be on those who benefit from our exploitation and division. All the children deserve to eat well & be healthy, and so do we. No matter what it costs.

🌟 Feature Performer: Scarborough born poet, emcee and arts educator, Joshua “Scribe” Watkis, has devoted himself to extracting the essence of his experiences; turning them into words worth their weight in feeling. The Canadian Poetry Slam Champion has authored two chapbooks (Tethered and Black Blossom/Harsh North); and collaborated with The FOLD on Audible's first Spoken Word Audiobook: Power In Poetry; Moods That Move. Beyond the contribution of his own poetry, Scribe co-curated and hosted ‘The Old Black Maple’, for the NAC’s debut Hip-Hop Theatre Festival. Most recently, he released his EP, SCENE IN CIN, available for purchase on Bandcamp.

I wanted to make a post where I’m not trying to convince anyone to buy or listen to something or tell you about something artistic I’m working on. I needed a break from that. To feel like I’m outside the rat race when I log on.

So here’s little snippets of my life. A family trip to Costa Rica, staying overnight in the hospital when my brother had emergency surgery (he’s okay), sweating at the gym, dressing for brick weather, my loved ones hanging out with my daughter. I’ve been living my life and trying to grow my capacity to show up in it.

I hope you’re doing okay. I haven’t really been around for my people the way I would like to be. I don’t organize my life the best, but I am trying my best to catch the glimpses you all share & let you know you’re seen. Thank you for seeing me, be myself, even if it’s just a little bit. This is an attempt to shake some perspective awake. This footage doesn’t fit on your phone screen the way it was shot. It was shot on cameras, on purpose, with a lens that was made for horizontal viewing. We generally are meant to see things in this fashion. Our field of vision is wide & watching all of our videos in a vertical format narrows our focus to the shape of our phones. It limits the amount of information we absorb visually. We get literally get a less full picture.

I am not a conspiracy theory type of guy, but I do like social analysis. I do think in the meta & the abstract, constantly trying to connect realities. I think, in a sick & covert way, we are being told to narrow our focus without purpose. To find niches that please us to watch, but not to engage with meaningfully. We are being conditioned into seeing things from a limited perspective, to accept it, without looking at the bigger picture.

I would like to encourage you to think big. Stretch your field of vision. Life, like this footage, is more beautiful that way. Sometimes it is more difficult to hold all at once, but we can’t live lives true to ourselves, without knowing. by @thisisscribe

I don’t like posting in vague phrases to give ideas about what’s going on in my life, but when I wrote this song I was thinking about people around me moving very very WEIRD. When I tell people the stories, their jaws drop & most can’t wrap their minds around it. I had to put some of that energy somewhere, and I gave some of it to CHEAT CODE. by @thisisscribe

I haven’t left any piece of myself behind. Skills are transferable and experience colours perspective. I pull traditions I no longer practice into the present day when they serve the moment I am living in. Nothing is useless. Everything you have ever been is valuable, even if just as cautionary tales. Use it all.

My aim as an artist, is the pinnacle of practice. My target is excellence in expression. My market value is the love & investment of those who join me in the journey. I decided I would not assess my worth by any numerical value. That allowed me to ascend to a level of confidence I won’t be unseated from.
