Been studying color lately.

When drafting screenplays I like to go to cafes and eavesdrop on conversations. Not looking for tea (although sometimes it’s nice 🥰🤭) but listening to cadences, pauses, subversive dialogue. It really helps me give my characters a voice unique to them and a dialogue that flows without being a full out exposition device.

Currently reading this book, Tempest Rising, for the second time. The first time I read it was in my 20’s. But it’s a historical fiction novel detailing the plight of three Black sisters growing up in the foster care system in the 1960’s after a series of unfortunate events. Diane McKinney-Whetstone is a profound writer whose prose is a welcome relief from the ai cadences we often read now. She writes in poems. But every page is gripping and you’re left wondering what is next. I highly recommend if you’re into Black American historical fiction and family drama. by @thisistyla
