Effort, and letting go of effort, was the major theme that came out of this week's Tuesday Improv Lab.
⠀
When we first learn how to do something, it's usually an effortful experience -- we work hard to put the pieces together, to do things right. Sometimes that effort is physical, sometimes mental, sometimes emotional, often a big mix.
⠀
But then we learn, and we no longer have to expend so much effort to do what we want to do.
⠀
A funny thing happens, though, where it feels wrong to do something without effort, wrong to enjoy the pleasure of something done easily and skillfully. Maybe we've come to associate effort with doing something well, conflating the two. Or maybe it goes deeper -- we live in a culture that values effort for effort's sake. Rise and grind, y'know? It's moral, puritanical.
⠀
And it can go deeper than any one skill. For many of us, effort is like a security blanket -- a habit that feels like it protects us, even if it also limits us. Because unnecessary effort wastes our energy and limits our expression. Performance feels forced and stilted, and strain is transmitted to the audience whether they know it consciously or not.
⠀
So, what to do with it? Identifying it is the first step. Understanding it -- asking what purpose the effort serves, what it's trying to protect you from -- might be the second. And third, relating to it as a part of yourself, perhaps expressing gratitude for it, before asking if you might try something else...
⠀
If you might allow yourself to do less work, in body and mind -- even a little bit, as an experiment. Not ignoring or repressing it, but releasing it.
⠀
As an #AlexanderTechnique teacher, this is territory I work in all the time, and #improv is a rich place to explore it too.
⠀
Today's lab also featured a delightful scene of two men arguing about their marriage at an aquarium, while a guppy mistakenly placed in the saltwater tank navigated an octopus and a couple of barracudas.
⠀
Good times.

Field Day with @finestcityimprov was so fun yesterday! I took a bunch of photos, but it was a big turnout and I'm not social media connected with a bunch of people anyway, so sharing this link here for anyone who wants 'em. by @thismighthelp.us

Basically, it's become an improv-focused artists' salon.
⠀
What started as a weekly drop-in class has become something else, where chill hang-out vibes meet deep improv experimentation in a safe, curated space with some great people.
⠀
Folks are getting feedback and reps tailored specifically to their questions, needs, and personal creative voices.
⠀
Everyone supports, processes, and plays together. It's just lovely.
⠀
There is room for more people to join us, but my goal isn't to sell out a class, and I've shifted to a pay-what-you-want model (money helps make it possible to do more stuff, but it's not the point, and you don't have to pay me).
⠀
I want to foster this unique space and continue to gather a community of growth-minded artists, and preserve what we've come to love about the Improv Lab.
⠀
I feel lucky to host this every Tuesday, starting at 7pm, in my little studio (just out of town, in east county off the Greenfield exit on the 8.)
⠀
If you might like to experience this for yourself, send me a DM for the details, and let me know where you're at in your improv/artist life. (thanks to this trio of labmates who are letting me use this pic from this last Tuesday!)

One week out from the first Tuesday #improv Lab! 🎭

A weekly drop-in if you want to get out of your head and into stronger two-person scenes.

✅ Two-person scene reps (the core building block of good improv, and where we can work on fundamentals and your habits)
✅ Focused side coaching (so you can put notes into action immediately and find your own fun)
✅ Improv nerdery (so you understand what's actually happening and build your own process + voice)

Tuesdays 7–9pm, starting Jan 13
$15 (and if that’s a barrier, DM me)

At my little studio -- DM me “Lab” for the address or register at link in bio.

(This one is for San Diego area folks. If you're interested in an online class, let me know! I'll run it if there's enough interest.)

Black & white means this is serious and classy.
