1984 READ OUT LOUD 💥 👁️ 📖
Sunday, October 4th
(All day long!)

The why: October 4th is the first day of Banned Books Week. This annual event raises awareness for our freedom to read. Banned Books Week launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of book challenges in libraries, schools, and bookstores. In case you’ve missed it, in the last 5 years we have had a resurgence of book challenges and book bans both locally in Idaho and nationwide.

To kick off our banned book events programme, we’re inviting you to join in for an all-day READ OUT LOUD event where our crew and our customers can partake in a live reading of 1984, one of the most well known (and highly relevant) banned books throughout time. We’ll start right at 12pm and keep reading until we run out of book (or time). 😮‍💨

Come and go as you’d like. We’ll have pizza from our neighbors at @heyblackmoon and will make a whole day of it. 🍕 🗣️

Curious what other banned books events we have going on? Check out our events calendar for more.

*this event was inspired by the Moby Dick read out loud event at Deep Vellum Books! 🐳 📚 @deepvellumbooks by @thisroomislit

A question we get more often than not is “can I read the books?”
Honey, great news! 🗞️ Not only can you read them but you can buy them and support our indie bookstore and beer bar. @oldspeakbar

Our indie bookstore, The Lit Room, started as an inkling of an idea in 2021, with the mission to bring lesser known but high caliber books forward into the Treasure Valley community. What started as a popup shop always had the end goal of being a physical space with community at the center and books on the periphery.

Overarching themes you’ll find in the collection of books on the shelves include global literature, titles from independent small presses, underrepresented voices, and other just damn good quirky reads. We filter books through a feminist lens, knowing inclusion of a specific title always means the rejection of another (we agree: the book buying budget could always be bigger) 😜 — for now, we work with what we’ve got and that means curated selection of diverse reads we’re proud of.

We host a multitude of literary events including panel discussions with local authors, themed nights, book clubs, and more. Want to partner with us? DM us for more. by @thisroomislit

Looking for Jane brought a full table and a lot to talk about at tonight’s Parcero x @thisroomislit Book Club. A story spanning decades, a letter that never reached its reader, and the women whose choices shaped each other’s lives made for a thoughtful conversation. Thank you to everyone who came ready to share and listen. Our discussion was so incredible and thought provoking. Cheers.

Our next book is The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende.
Discussion Date: Monday, October 26 | 6 PM

Everyone is welcome. No RSVP required, and you don’t even have to finish the book to join us. Grab a copy at The Lit Room or through the link in our bio, which also supports our friends at The Lit Room. 🤍📚🍷 by @thisroomislit

This Sunday! 📖

Reading and Conversation with Josh Weil and Alan Heathcock, discussing Josh’s new novel WHAT CAME WEST. @joshjweil @alan_heathcock

Long considered a writer’s writer, Josh Weil is the author of the novel The Great Glass Sea, the novella collection The New Valley, and the story collection The Age of Perpetual Light. He is a Fulbright Fellow and has been awarded the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 award, the California Book Award, and a Pushcart Prize. For the past dozen years, he has called the Sierra Nevada of Northern California home.

An avid outdoorsman, he has traversed much of the terrain in What Came West, swam in the lakes high in the Sierra Buttes, scrambled in the Grouse Ridge region, and white water rafted down the South Yuba River, and explored remote Appalachia, Egypt’s Western Desert, Romania’s Carpathian mountains, Slovakia’s Tatras, the Karelian lakes region of northern Russia, Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains, and the Mongolian Steppe—all with nothing more than a pack and a one-man tent.

A visual artist and lithographer, he spent six months completing the twenty intricate dip-pen illustrations throughout What Came West. by @thisroomislit
