A unique blend of traditional art and marine conservation came alive at Kanimangalam School, Thrissur, during Wildlife Week 2026 through a captivating Tholpavakoothu (shadow puppetry) performance aimed at raising awareness about #whaleshark conservation.

The programme was inaugurated by Rajeev Ramachandran, son of Padma Shri awardee Ramachandra Pulavar.

Through an engaging interactive session and a special puppetry performance, students learned about the cultural significance of Tholpavakoothu, the Pan-India Whale Shark Conservation Project, and the challenges whale sharks face when accidentally entangled in fishing nets. The story showcased the collaborative efforts of fishers and conservation teams to rescue and safely release an entangled whale shark back into the sea.

By bringing together cultural heritage and conservation education, the programme inspired young minds to protect whale sharks and encouraged peaceful coexistence between fishing communities and marine wildlife. by @tholpavakoothu
