Some end of year reflections - You get asked so many times what it is like to win the Olympics. People expect it to be the most ecstatic feeling of all time, but it all meant something quite different to each of us.

I thought all the photographers missed a special moment I had, but I found this photo just last week.

There were so many moments over the course of losing Mum that I wondered whether I should quit—whether I was capable of being good enough whilst under the stress. Whether it was worth missing more of the precious time we had. I was in Sierra Nevada, the toughest altitude camp of the year, when I got the final call to come home. I could have been at home.

It’s glorified in our culture that one should suffer through and persevere no matter what. That is what champions do—they make the sacrifice—and that is worthy of the highest respect in our society.

Take it from someone who did that: it is not always the right choice. I believe it is far harder to be there at every moment for someone, to see their weaknesses and fears constantly, and to put your own needs aside. You make the hard choices, and at the end of it all, no one thanks you, gives you a medal (literally), or even makes you feel seen.

It’s why, in many ways, I think throwing all my emotion into rowing—although I found it so difficult—was somewhat easier. I say this as a memo of respect for all those who don’t feel seen, have suffered at the hands of terminal illness of a loved one, and feel more isolated from the world on the other side of it. To care in that way for someone you love is one of the biggest ways you can step up in life.

Three years. Two parents lost. Words cannot describe how deep you have had to dig, or how much strength you have had to find. I know your mum is with you, and is prouder than anyone has ever been. My dad would be in awe. I am honoured to have been a part of this journey and know all your people earthside see you, and know what you have achieved. You are so so so loved, here’s to you @thomas_digby #olympicchampion taken in Paris, France by @thomas_digby

So good to get back racing. Been a little under the weather lately with mould from an AC unit in the place I've just moved into. Be careful with that with the heat waves everyone, but starting to get the energy back and buzzing to be selected in the men's pair to race at Europeans in three weeks' time. So much fun and so easy to trust a project with someone like Jake. On to Italy! by @thomas_digby

So chuffed to come away with the Goblets in my first time back in the boat for a while at @henleyroyalregatta . Pleasure to work on this project with @_jake_wincomb_ , thanks for teaching me all the tricks of the trade. Huge respect to all the pairs we raced, made for a very tough weekend of racing. Given I have been able to plan and design a lot of my training over the last couple of years and good to see we are heading in the right direction. I’m still managing my hips in recovery, they aren’t behaving perfectly just yet, but the glimmers of body working optimally have got me excited for what is to come. On to Europeans! by @thomas_digby

Weekly training update #2

A 30 minute WR - with a very warm right leg, see vid 3.
Some R&D on a new type of gel 👀
First time above 30 in the pair
Some power work
3 by 2k but the erg decided to cut out (last one was 6:08)
Created a new little cycle group to keep me company this summer 👌
(They are now going to end up as part of my testing group to bombard with samples)

Still at the national centre only a couple of days a week until I move house shortly, then we can really put the foot down and get ready for Henley 🎪 by @thomas_digby
