Nine years ago, I photographed professional ballet dancer @georgeta.varvarici at Bocci 79 on Kantstraße. An old Berlin courthouse filled with lighting installations, with room after room to photograph her in.

I’d already been photographing Berlin for seven years, but this place opened up an interest I hadn’t really explored before. I started paying attention to interiors and design beyond how they might look in a photograph. Bocci 79 was one of the first places to have that effect on me, and my connection with Bocci has continued ever since.

The showroom no longer exists in this form. The building is now Amtsalon, and the Bocci installation in the main staircase is still there. These photographs show how it looked when I shot this series in 2017. taken in Berlin - Charlottenburg by @thomas_k

Anzeige | I’ve spent much of this summer photographing Tenerife. Often, the part I’m interested in is quite far from where I’m standing. Being able to pick it out with a longer lens changes what I can do with an otherwise fairly ordinary view.

I used the Sony A6700 for this Reel. It’s small enough to take along without much thought, produces detailed video and lets me quickly switch to photos when I want a still instead. Having different lenses to choose from also leaves plenty of room to try things out.

This is the second part of my “My First Alpha” project with @sony.deutschland.at. The idea is to make getting into street and travel photography less complicated, with room to explore both photos and video as you go. taken in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain by @thomas_k

You don’t always have to capture an expression to capture an emotion.

For this third part of “The Art of Noticing the street” I wanted to look at what happens when you leave more of the surroundings in the frame. Someone can be barely visible and still be the reason the whole picture works. Their size against a building, where they stand in the light, or how much empty street surrounds them changes how we read the scene.

That’s what interests me in these shots. Getting closer would give us more detail about the person, but we’d lose some of what makes the image feel the way it does. The architecture, the weather and the distance all contribute.

We also don’t know what any of these people were feeling. A photograph can feel lonely to us while the person in it is just walking to work. I like that there’s room for both.

Ad | Put @hanna.look in a silver jacket inside ICC Berlin and it’s pretty difficult to stop taking pictures. The outfit made sense in almost every corner of this building.

We brought a group of creators here to kick off @ifa.berlin week and I’m still seeing new photos from that morning appearing in my feed. After months of organising, that’s a very nice thing to come back to.

This was my third time being part of IFA, this year also as an Ambassador. Alongside the ICC walk, I hosted a masterclass and workshop, caught up with people I’ve worked with for years and met plenty of new ones.

The organising and teaching are a big part of what I enjoy about these projects. But I’m glad I also got to spend some of that morning behind the camera.

The last time I went to Tomorrowland was in Brazil almost ten years ago for a similar project. It’s still one of my favorite jobs to date.

Last month I finally made it back, this time to Belgium. @timraack and I spent three days filming the festival, then turned all that footage into this Reel on the Ombibook Ultra HP 14, powered by Snapdragon X2 Elite.

I expected the festival to be intense. I didn’t quite expect 30,000 steps every day, barely any sleep and then having to make sense of all that footage. Luckily, the edit was the uncomplicated part.

Almost a month since the last one. I’m clearly still working on the “normalizing” part.

I think these posts keep doing well because so many of us remember being a lot less complicated about this app. You had a photo you liked and wanted people to see it. Choosing that photo could take forever, but at least you weren’t also deciding what else it needed to become before you could share it.

There’s probably a bit of that in the reaction to this series. The question on the image helps obviously. But I think people also miss how they used to post themselves. I’d be interested to see what some of you would share if you stopped wondering whether it was enough for a post. taken in Potsdam, Germany by @thomas_k

The first image is the shot everyone would take. I took it too. But the building gets more interesting once you leave the main hall and the perfect symmetry disappears.

The further you get into the Kriminalgericht Moabit, the quieter, less perfect and far less predictable it becomes. taken in Kriminalgericht Moabit by @thomas_k
