32 years and two weeks ago I crafted my wedding vows. I worked tirelessly on them wanting to get the words right. 32 years ago tonight I shared those vows with Fred Stella. Then he shared his vows. But as soon as Father (cousin) Tom put the mic in front of him Stellar went into “radio voice.” That’s what I call it. Think top 40 jock of a soft rock station. I don’t mind the voice when he does it. Usually. It’s deep, and saccharine. He’s performing. It’s great when he says, “and it’s the top of the hour. That was the latest single climbing the charts, Angel Baby from Toby Beau.” Great, right?

I do mind the voice when he’s reciting his wedding vows. “I. Fred Stella. Take thee…” It’s hard to convey it here but pretend you are a radio jock using a voice meant to make unknown women swoon. Seriously it was surreal to hear it in that moment.

Under my breath I was willing him to “stop it.” I must’ve said it 10 times while staring deep into his eyes. He didn’t even know he was doing it. He didn’t know why I was giving him the stink eye. On our wedding day. During our sacred vows.

I don’t remember what he said. I’m sure he said he would vow to make me laugh. That he has done. Repeatedly. I barely remember what I said. I do know we both committed our lives to each other and that we would each strive to put good in the world. I dare say he’s done an extraordinary job at that and I am all the better for it.

My marriage has been a genuine gift because my partner is an exceptional man. Thanks for an amazing run so far, Stellar.

Missing people in the pic. My bro was back at the house getting a slide show pulled together, Sean and Rin left a few hours earlier, as did Stellar. Different country. Different song. Same sheep. Different views. In and around Bakewell where we’ve been tucked in for a few days. Is Fred happy because he loves his Vegan Wellington? Or because his wife said she thinks he has the best hair in the restaurant? Probably both. But he did seem pretty excited by the hair comment. And also, the fish and chips here were ridiculously good. I mean I’ve never experienced them as good as this. Ever. How can Americans put fish and chips on a menu and call it fish and chips? Shame. Shame. by @thomeplay
