Weaving experimentation with Bà Hiền:
it was the first time she was “mixing” colored yarns together when weaving. The Thái textile people normally use two colors when they weave - one for the vertical warp and one for the horizontal weft threads. The process of using different colors for the horizontal weft threads made the work much more laborious in terms of time, but the result is more original and striking, as Bà Hiền said.

on a sunny or rainy day, dị xee will come up the village and help her sister bà gần to prepare her fabric for the Sunday market.
Here, she will stay a whole day pressing the stamp and hand-draw each pattern on the woven fabric.

Each symbols drawn down the fabric are amongst the Hmong design patterns that have been passed down through generations. They not only showcase their skill but also reflect their spiritual connection to the world around them 🤍

The central spiral and diamond motif
is a variation of the snail shell or ram’s horn motif. In Hmong textile symbology, spiral-based motifs are deeply tied to family unity, growth, ancestral protection, and the cycle of life. The symmetrical arrangement framing the diamond symbolizes a protected household or community center.

The Radiating “Sun” Spirals

This represents the sun or pumpkin seeds/flowers. The spiral core grounds the design, while the radiating outer rays signify life-giving energy, warmth, and agricultural fertility. Pumpkins and their seeds are staple symbols of abundance and prosperity in high-altitude Hmong Villages. by @thupithu

Meet Thị Hoàng Thư Nguyễn, a Geneva-based textile designer specialising in hand felting and knitting. With a passion for ancient techniques and intricate patterns, her practice brings traditional craftsmanship into conversation with contemporary design.

During her residency in Vietnam, Thị Hoàng Thư Nguyễn will explore the connections between Vietnamese textile traditions and contemporary practice, looking at how techniques such as weaving, embroidery and tie-dye are preserved, passed down and reimagined across generations.
The residency will result in documented research and new textile designs that bring heritage and contemporary creativity into dialogue.

One year ago, I got the opportunity and the luck to be able to travel to Vietnam and visit the north for the first time. There, I met Mme Du and her daughter who are part from the Giay ethnic community and who transmit their handwork knowledge through generation.
Their simplicity in making beautiful textile from scratch, drawing the landscape which surrounding them made me even more realise the respect and love they have for the nature.
