In good design, the pretty part comes last, even with a towel warmer.

Everyone wants to start with the finish. Polished or matte black? I get it, that’s the fun part. It’s also the easiest decision you’ll make, so save it for last.

Start with the decisions that shape your budget and your layout. First, hardwired or plug-in? Hardwired gives you the cleanest look, but it means getting your electrician in before the walls close up.

Once you’re planning wiring, you’re planning placement. Put the warm towel right where you step out of the shower, not across the room.

Next, think about controls. Opt for a timer if you want your towel warm on your schedule, without the warmer running all day. And don’t stop at the bath. A towel warmer earns its keep in a mudroom, a dressing room, a laundry room, and yes, the dog wash station.

Once you’ve made those decisions, you can move onto the fun part: the finish. My “choose the pretty part last” rule is true for a towel warmer, and it’s true for every kitchen and bath I design.

I specify @ambaproducts because they make both halves easy: the planning and the pretty.

Now that we’ve talked through function, which would you choose: polished or matte black?

IDS did it again, with an impressive conference at the Bellagio in Vegas, and I had the privilege of speaking on The Business of Kitchen & Bath: Foundations That Fuel Profitability.

Here’s what I told the room: kitchens and baths are some of the most profitable projects in interior design, and some of the most avoided. Designers worry about construction, coordination, and losing control of their design, a fear that usually comes from not having the right foundation (not from a lack of talent).

So we walked through the foundation:
∙ Clear contracts and a defined scope.
∙ Repeatable processes
∙ Profitable product avenues most designers leave on the table.
∙ How to stay in control from the first meeting to the final reveal.

Thank you @‌IDSnational for having me, and to every designer who filled that room ready to work.

Next stop: High Point Market, October 16–20. Will you be there? Give a wave in the comments!

Designers, you know this moment: the room is finished, and there's a keypad right in the middle of the wall you designed around, or speakers where the art was supposed to go.

Those problems don’t pop up on install day, they usually start weeks earlier, in a conversation where everyone thought they were on the same page.

CEDIA showed me how we can bring integrators and designers together to create better outcomes, and it’s all in my blog.

Designers: Have you ever had a client send you 14 countertop screenshots before the cabinets were even drawn?

If you've been there, you know how the rest goes... a finish gets picked, and then questioned, and picked again, and the hours add up, which you never bill for.

Since the finish phase is the prettiest part of a kitchen, it’s what your clients get most excited about. If you don’t manage that process well, it can end up being the slowest and least profitable part of your job.

On our October Community Call, I'm walking you through how I lead that phase:

- How to sequence selections so every choice has an anchor to follow
- How to keep clients moving forward instead of circling back
- How to hold the schedule and the budget while the room comes together

You'll leave with a process you can use on your very next project, so you’ll want to make this one.

Join us and invite a designer friend to Leading the Finish Line: How to Run Finish Selections Without Losing Time, Margin, or Control. It’s happening Wednesday, October 14 | 1:30pm EST | Live on Zoom. It’s free, click that link in bio to sign up.

Coordinating finishes across manufacturers is one of the most time-consuming parts of specifying a bath. You love the faucet from one brand and the accessories from another, and then you spend days wondering whether the finishes will actually look right together.

@‌ambaproducts built a finish coordination tool right into their website to prevent that problem:

1. Go to the Amba website and open the finish coordination tool.
2. Enter the brand you're already using.
3. See which Amba finishes will coordinate with it.

That's it. You can make the decision in minutes and move forward with confidence, and your clients never have to see you second-guessing.

I've been talking about Amba a lot lately because I use them in my own projects, and tools like this are a big reason why.

Save this for your next bath project.

This powder room used to be an open porch, the space this family walked past every day and almost never used.

What this space really was, was a chance to give them something their home was missing, so we closed it in and created a powder bath.

That one small room changed how they live in their home. Now guests have a place to go on the main floor, and a forgotten corner is now one of the prettiest rooms in the house.

What's the space in your home nobody uses? Tell me what you'd turn it into 👇

Sheetrock is up, spackling is done, and the Queen is starting to look like a home.

This is one of my favorite moments in any build. For months you walk through studs and wiring and trust the plan. Then the walls go up, and suddenly you can stand in a room and feel it: the proportions, where the light falls, how you'll actually move through the space.

Next up for the Queen: our GC, Randy, is sharing his insider take on sheetrock installation. Click “follow” so you don’t miss out.

Towel warmers are not one-size-fits-all.

Finish, form, and placement all shift depending on the style of the bath.

Swipe through to see how I'd choose the right Amba warmer for five different rooms, from a French traditional bath to an industrial one with subway tile and a trough sink.

Then save this one. You’ll want it for your next bath project.

On rainy days when extended family comes over, this is where everyone ends up.

We built in billiards, foosball, poker, gaming, a big screen for movies, and a bar in the middle. It’s got something for everyone in the family, including a fridge stocked for the adults and another for the kids.

Getting every detail right takes a lot of listening. Do that part well, and clients don’t worry about the process. That’s exactly how this client felt:

"There is no one better than Sharon Sherman! ...I would trust her to come into my home and design it without even asking what we think. She is so much fun to work with and I look forward to continuing for a long time to come.”

Ready for someone to help you create the home you’ve always wanted? You don’t even have to know your style. I’ll help you figure it out! Click the link in bio to get started.

Every designer I know can text, post, email, and put together a beautiful image. That’s also the stuff AI can help with. Now, walking up to a stranger, starting a conversation, and actually listening to the answer, those are networking skills tech can’t take over. Because they are innately human.

Networking starts with the skill to listen well. The rest I’ve practiced for decades in this industry, and I’m bringing it all to Nedcon on October 6. Join us for The Secret Sauce of Networking, an entire hour, in a room filled with people (fitting, right?).

Will we see you in Hoboken? Grab your ticket, the link’s in my bio.

Roll call: who’s coming to IDS Vegas?

I’m speaking Tuesday the 29th at 11:15 a.m. on the business side of kitchen and bath. We’re covering contracts, scope, and building a process you can run again on the next job.

Kitchen and bath is some of the most profitable work in this industry, and it lives or dies on construction and coordination. If you’ve been handing that part to the GC, hoping it comes back the way you drew it, come sit in. I’ll walk through how I keep hold of a project from contract through install.

This is the work that got me named KBB Person of the Year, which helped land me this mic, but you’re the reason I’m showing up.

Drop a comment if you’ll be there so I can look for you, or find me after the session. I’m not in a rush.
