This was not something I was aware of at first, but it is something I can’t stop noticing now:

Control is the word I hear most often in my practice.

I don’t know how, and I don’t know why, but control holds the promise of happiness. It holds the promise of security.

Control xyz, and you will be happy. Your mind can rest once you’re in control.

If that were the case, enough would have been enough at some point. I barely see anyone in control actually happy, satisfied, and not seeking more of it.

The happiest people I have ever seen are relaxed, curious, unabashedly genuine, and kind.

They are never self-critical, and they don’t ride the personal growth trend.
They are actually happy by lack of control.

Can you guess who they are?

My wishes to all for the new year:

May we laugh uncontrollably. May we love unconditionally. May we dream freely.

Just like cars run better on higher quality benzene, humans too run better on higher quality fuel, meaning NUTRIENT DENSE FOOD.
Nutrient dense meals are as diverse as possible and include food sources in their most natural, unprocessed state.

How can you start adding nutrients to your meals:
- Start with the smallest ingredient in every plate: SALT.
Most table salt is processed and stripped from the naturally occuring array of minerals. Recent studies have also shown that processed, iodized sea salt may exacerbate autoimmune thyroiditis. You may find that reducing iodine intake by switching to unrefined sea salt improves your thyroid function.

- Enhance Nutrient Density in the foods you already eat.
Whole grains and seeds can be made even more nutrient dense with just a little prep. Soaking them overnight, maybe even for a few days until they sprout, makes all the essential nutrients in those foods more easily digestible.
If you are new to this, you can start by soaking brown rice, lentils or quinoa with a bit of lemon juice or vinegar for up to 8 hours before you start cooking them.

- Consider eating Organ meats.
Organ meats, like liver and heart, are some of the most nutrient dense foods available. Nutrients that are a bit hard to get from other sources like vitamin B12, B1, Iron and Molybdenum are especially abundant in these foods.
Again, soaking organ meats with just enough water and the juice of a lemon for 3-5 hours in the fridge will make them easier to digest. Cook them in a bit of olive, coconut or avocado oil.

Eating more nutrient dense foods has a positive impact on the body and not only enhances energy, but also the quality of how the body functions. Your energy levels do not depend on getting any kind of fuel, but getting the right fuel that allows your engine to run smoothly. by @thyroid.ette

Something struck me in my academic studies of energy requirements, and it was that when at first they calculated them way back when before the ‘obesity epidemic’, they were estimated to be at 3000 calories (Nieman, 2018). So now I have to ask, why is it that experts and non-experts alike believe in calorie restriction? Why is this a problem only now, and not a hundred years ago? Not that I personally think there is anything morally wrong with taking space or that health cannot be achieved at any weight, but if this is something a client asks me about, how much benefit does calorie restriction offer, and what are the risks involved? If we think this is “good for them”, why is it good, and can this good be achieved otherwise?

There are unfortunately not many new studies that measure the long term effects of dieting. A book with a great first chapter on metabolism explains really well, with the help of overeating and undereating studies from the last century, why our metabolism is so adaptive resilient to weight change (Andrew Jenkinson, 2020). Using the calories in-calories out framework, the weight loss surgeon who wrote the book does the math and shows that if this were true in that simple form, the average American would have gained 26 kg over a year, instead of the observed 6kg in the 80s. Jenkinson (2020) goes into the theory that homeostatic feedback loops complicate this equation to make it harder to lose weight, and Memon et al. (2020) see “hormonal disturbances, interactions with the gut microbiome, lack of sleep, and socioeconomic status” as additional confounders, making calorie restrictive diets an illogical solution.

Being environmentally friendly doesn't just help the earth, it is also good for our bodies. Chemical ingredients found in conventional cleaning and personal hygiene products can have a negative impact on thyroid health.

Similar to nutrition, what we touch, put on our skin and breathe in also has an impact on our bodies. The following suggestions offer ways to use more eco friendly and body friendly in products we use.

- Substitute cleaning products with more natural products like @[17841436736071641:@wellworldwithhana]
- Castille Soap is versatile. You can use it to clean floors, yoga mats, and as hand soap.
- Ask your dentist about fluoride free toothpaste, like @[17841402041988884:@boka]. Making your own is also an option.
- Find natural alternatives to perfumes and deodorants at @[17841408522664774:@blacklotusegypt] and @[17841407172047634:@hers_products]
- Consider getting a house plant or two for natural air purification. by @thyroid.ette

Nutritional Therapy is a unique way of navigating your health. With the help of a practitioner (NTP), you explore your goals and concerns, and see how they might tie in with the 6 FOUNDATIONS of Nutritional Therapy. There is no one size-fits-all; these foundations are only foundations to be built upon. It is the Bioindividual needs of each single person that guide the specific use of these foundations.
