shhhhh…just pretend it’s still november and I didn’t forget to post a recap of my fundrager🥰

but seriously wow, every year i’m reminded how lucky I am to be in this lifetime with you all🥺 $2000 raised for @thebeaconmm and @filamushistory206 all from a waacking workshop from THEEE Sag icon @mactrayy and from the debut film screening of Dr.Aguilar and I’s documentary :,) (stay tuned for more screenings) all captured by my lil bro @delanoavodroc (BOOK HIM!!!).

this space was so full of love and intention and care and a good reminder to the future we want and deserve. thank you to the folks, whether i knew you or not, who showed up⭐️ I especially want to thank my family and friends who helped me with logistics and kept us FED with baon/leftovers included HAHA I learned all my party planning from them tbh💯

my quarter life crisis is actually not as scary as I thought it would be and that is in part due to the community i’ve been raised by, and the one I continue to learn from and grow with. much love!! go freakbob with me again soon? HAHAHHAHA taken in The Beacon by @tiannama3

so it’s my documentarian debut..🫣

for those that don’t know, I had the honor of being the first Filipinx American US History course teacher at Seattle Public Schools❤️ this historic course was the first to complete the US History Requirement in WA state and had been a product of over 50+ years of community work and fight. the last two years was transformative and reinforced my dedication to Ethnic Studies, and most importantly, to the next generation of critical thinkers, learners, and organizers.

But as systems of oppression do, every year I was teaching, they tried to stifle the liberatory work we were doing at SPS. They didn’t see the value of bringing community into the classroom, and bringing the classroom out to the community. They didn’t see the value of cross cultural solidarity building, of students (and not just marginalized students) actually feeling empowered in their identities. They refused to prioritize Ethnic studies and tried to cut them.

But as our ancestors did, time and time again, the students resisted. They organized a campaign, they mobilized with community, they saved the course for another year. They set the tone for how we fight for our futures, and set an precedent for others nationwide.

It would mean the world to me for the Seattle community to come out and support this documentary film about the story of the power of my hometown community. This documentary, in collaboration with Dr. Edmundo Aguilar, is the story of a peoples who refuse to be forgotten. We hope you find yourself in our story, and find those around you in the fight as well✊

All proceeds from this go towards @filamushistory206 💜 hope to see y’all there and thank you in advance for supporting my first documentary project! by @tiannama3

CALLING DANCER FRIENDS AND THOSE WANTING TO TRY⭐️

⭐️COME AS YOU ARE!!⭐️
a motto that resounds in the @thebeaconmm space and from my first class, it’s something i’ve seen them embody, and something i’ve come to embrace in my own life.

when I first started taking classes at the Beacon, I would have never called myself a dancer, but now I know anyone can dance, and it’s a matter of how your dancing connects you to community. teachers at the beacon, and their guests, created such a welcoming space, that it became a pillar for me. I was able to meet so many amazing people in seattle and I still haven’t found a community like the beacon since leaving seattle :,)

not only was it the community, but it was the education and dedication to the genres. each class has taught me new things about the history and community of house, waacking, and breaking specifically. liberatory genres born out of Black, Brown, and Queer struggle and resistance, to tell story and break bread and battle, to take up space and create ones of their own. they are spaces where we don’t need to be perfect, we just need to be. and especially as some of us are non Black people in the space, the Beacon emphasized that we have a responsibility to protect and contribute to the culture, and that means doing our due diligence and paying respects to the OGs and their communities. for me, to be a dancer is to be in right relationship with the dance communities!

overall I can say i’m a more confident person, someone who has redefined my relationship to my body and how I show up, and someone who really isn’t afraid to be and take up space. i feel more dedicated to liberation on different fronts and more principled in my role. isn’t it funny how sometimes the things we do can create the template to who we want to be?

if you’ve been thinking of taking a dance class in a non judge mental environment that is rooted in community,,,,now is your chance @mactrayy was the catalyst for me and i know you’ll be in good hands with her hehe 🤝🤝🤝🤝come groove with us :,) and fundraise so others can enjoy the beacon for free/reduced prices!!

EDIT: The Beacon is wheelchair accessible and has two ADA bathrooms now :,)

what’s better than 24?👀 come find out tinyurl.com/tiannas25

in times like these, where it feels like everything is falling a part, i always I turn to community. without y’all, I wouldn’t be here, and everyday you show all versions of me that liberation is possible, and is here!. in these past two years, little me has guided me through life with such wonder and through things that little me loved growing up. whether through liberatory dance, the genres histories, and community, or through teaching, learning, and developing liberatory ethnic studies, I have been blessed with reminders of our collective life. creativity and education saved my life, truly. and with every immersion into these communities, I connect with others who want to save the next generation too.

my birthday fundrager (fundraiser and rager) is back, but this time in a different form! for my 25th I will be hosting a dance workshop by the one and only, @mactrayy and debuting my first documentary film project “Reclaiming Humanity: Saving Seattles First Filipinx American History Course” 🌱 come dance and watch with me, and support my communities!

all proceeds from this fundrager will go towards @thebeaconmm dance scholarships and students and teachers of the @filamushistory206 class⭐️ more details to come! taken in The Beacon by @tiannama3
