UNKNOWN ARTIST by Roman Buxbaum is on view at @wasserkirchezurich until July 12.

Artist, psychiatrist, and psychotherapist Roman Buxbaum (*1958) presents UNKNOWN ARTIST, an exhibition and interactive performance exploring what makes creative work visible—and what allows it to disappear into anonymity. Developed together with a group of art students, themes of the contemporary art world were transformed into performative actions and situations as well as in immersive installation. Rather than celebrating the heroes of art history and their immortal works, the project is dedicated to unknown artists whose paintings remain nameless and unnoticed in attics, cellars, second-hand shops and flea markets.

On the occasion of @zurichartweekend , the piece was activated as a procession with music, singing and monstrances, a manifesto read aloud and answered by a speaking chorus, the contemplative laying down of candles in memory of the forgotten, and the ceremonial unveiling of a monument to the unknown artist. Oscillating between performative action, political agitation, psychotherapy and religious ritual, these elements were brought together through a shared scenography under the title UNKNOWN ARTIST.

Concept and dramaturgy: Roman Buxbaum
Exhibition curator: Christoph Lichtin
Performance curatorial and dramaturgical collaboration: Karina Kottová
Performers: Karolína Kubešová, Zbyněk Rohlík, Barbora Šošolíková, Alessandra Točoňová
(Academy of Performing Arts, Prague) and students of art academies

💬 When the structures of artistic recognition are under pressure, the UNKNOWN ARTIST turns away from the celebrated figure and toward what remains unnamed.

⚫️ The performance by artist and psychotherapist Roman Buxbaum in collaboration with art school students premiered at the National Gallery Prague @ngprague on May 17, 2026 and will be restaged at Wasserkirche Zurich @wasserkirchezurich on June 12- 13, 2026 as a part of the Zurich Art Weekend @zurichartweekend.

📌 If you wish to join us as a workshop participant or performer, DM @tichyocean or email info@tichyocean.com.

In times of uncertainty, the UNKNOWN ARTIST proposes a minimal gesture:

To remain with the work,
without resolving it into a name.

To gather,
without deciding.

To remember,
what has never been fully known.

UNKNOWN ARTIST by Czech-Swiss artist and psychotherapist Roman Buxbaum takes the form of a performative procession and an immersive installation. The project pays tribute to unnamed and forgotten artists while reflecting on authorship, visibility, and the desire for recognition. Situated at the intersection of performance, somatic and therapeutic practice, exhibition-making, and institutional intervention, the project examines the conditions under which artistic value is assigned, preserved, or erased.
