Maybe you recall my rejection after applying for a doctoral program in 2021. I shared how in my devastation and anger, I told God, “you know this was the only dream I have held since before my husband and kids…” Mid cry, I heard Him say to me, “that is the problem. You are holding on to an old dream tied to a woman I am no longer working with.”

My girl kid leaves for college next Friday, and my boy kid started the 10th grade last week. Empty nesting is close in view and I don’t want to meet her unprepared.

Last year, I really started to give focus to who I am now, what I want, and where I believe I should head. Three years removed from the rejection and desire, the idea of school gripped me again. While I began to get excited about giving it another go, I needed to make sure that I was not molding and massaging God’s will to look like mine. I asked God a simple thing, if this is Your will, please make the search and process easy. It was, from my husband saying he only saw all green flags to meeting the director of my program for coffee.

I said yes.
The school said yes.
GOD SAID YES.
In two weeks, I will begin my PhD in Leadership Studies program and I wanted to capture my feelings in photo (thank you @curtisjmoore).

Here is what I’ve learned through this: You may have to release some things you really want so that God can give them back to you when you’re ready for them.

I’m already nervous about things like finding my way around campus, staying focused during lecture and remembering where I parked 🤣, but I also can’t stop daydreaming about teaching at the collegiate level, authoring scholarly research, saying my name with a new prefix, and picturing my peanut head with one of those floppy grad caps walking across a stage at 51.

Changing my name for the second time, 😉

This is just some of the local (national) news in about a week’s time.

We have made humanity too expensive.

I truly wonder how far away from humanity can we go? Will we go? by @tiekonejon

Ambition has become code for get more, keep up, go faster, repeat with no clear markers for success.

What do you want?

I believe more people would be at peace if they weren’t using other people’s measuring stick for success.

The two-bedroom home would be beautiful if it weren’t for seeing the 5-bedroom.

The road trip would feel like joy if it weren’t for seeing someone else posed in Paris.

The career would feel just fine if it weren’t for witnessing someone else build a business.

The marriage would feel satisfying, were it not for scrolling past someone else’s storybook romance.

Your pace would feel productive if it weren’t for watching someone else’s speed.

What do you need? What do you want? What counts as your win?

What good is ambition if it is not your own?

Ambition is not one-size-fits-all because success is not. Borrowing someone else’s ambition might fit you like anxiousness. by @tiekonejon

I will first acknowledge that this has struck a nerve in me in the oddest way because he reminds me of my boy kid. I can only imagine what I would hope for in my social neighbors if it were happening to me or my loved ones.

No, I don’t think we are supposed to just stop life or risk a living. As well, I believe we all deserve to chase joy down and cuff it to us as tight as we can, and I think thriving is a form of resistance.

BUT

We are capable of holding two truths because the perpetrators are always relying on us to let the hard truth lie dormant. by @tiekonejon

I know my page is not one for Bible study or Biblical discussion but I am an entrepreneur practicing in the corporate space and soon to introduce open-access to my work. I believe the rise in “spiritual” work, coaching, etc is a cultural phenomenon of Christianity that is rarely addressed.

We have ushered in profiting from the spiritual work, but Christ, having a paying job outside of His spiritual work is intriguing to me.

There had to be a reason to make it known that He was a carpenter.

I question the spiritual work to economy pipeline. I remain concerned o the state of Church—the Body. I welcome answers that point to scripture. by @tiekonejon

Don’t question your hope. Question your faith. My personal prayer has been to measure my substance. HOPE ≠ FAITH but FAITH = HOPE by @tiekonejon

One more course semester closed and ONLY one more to go.

The biggest hurdle was not my age, my family, the timing, the investment. It was shushing the noise of the doubt.

I remember people (that I love and trust) saying, you don’t need to go back to school, and letting that go on replay in my head until I began to answer my own WHY, instead of answering theirs.

It’s nearing an end, and all I can tell you is GO!

Pretend you don’t see the typo👀. Imagine putting a seed in the ground and then digging up the dirt everyday to see if it has taken root.
