Anyone else fatigued by US politics yet? Why not take a step back in time with us to spring of 2020, for the next and long awaited installment of our series “For Wild’s Sake: The Rare Trout Chronicles”!

The new episode, which tells the incredible true story of the Bear River and its unique cutthroat trout is currently live on our @patreon

All current patrons have access to it early, before it goes live to the public next Sunday. And for the first time we’ve made the post available to everyone else for a one time fee of 3 bucks. Can’t wait another week? Head on over and enjoy a Sunday matinee showing for less than the cost of a coffee. If not, no worries, we’ll see you at the public premiere next weekend. Either way, you won’t wanna miss it! taken in Utah, USA by @tightloopsfly

This spring, we had the opportunity to spend some time at @snowpeakcampfield in Long Beach, WA. Living on the road full time, experiences in places like this are treasured. Immediately upon arrival there was an obvious shift while we walked to our Jyubako. A calm, quiet wave rolling over us. We took this time to recenter ourselves. Soaking in the Ofuro spa was downright luxurious. A much needed reset and rest before we dove into a busy summer. Can’t wait to go back someday.

Chase and I have been contemplating the idea of hosting a gathering at a space like this — would anyone be interested? What kind of things would you like to see/do if we did?

I can’t say, after our brief acquaintance, that I know western Mongolia’s Khovd River well, but I do know that I’ll be back to learn more . . .

Deep in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, @tightloopsfly set out by packraft in search of an isolated population of Arctic char - relics of a colder landscape left behind as the last glaciers retreated thousands of years ago.

After hours of portaging between remote lakes and battling worsening conditions, the fishing never quite came together.

But just before sunset, a young moose came crashing out of the woods at a full sprint.

Ten seconds later, they found out why 👀

Let’s talk salmon! In Alaska, there’s 5 different species to get acquainted with, and each one has a unique set of habits, and skills required to catch them. 🎣🐟🤔

Anyone else feeling as lost as we were? Drop your fav salmon species in the comments & why!

To make it home, they have to become 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦.

@tightloopsfly arrive on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula just as the salmon are beginning one of the strangest transformations in the natural world.

After years spent as sleek, silver fish in the open ocean, Pacific salmon return to freshwater to spawn - changing color, growing hooked jaws and teeth, and taking on almost monstrous forms along the way. And once that final journey begins, so does another transformation: their bodies literally begin to break down, with every last bit of energy devoted to completing the cycle.

It’s a brief, brutal return home - and one that brings an entire Alaskan ecosystem to life.

When traveling through the Yukon, we absolutely had to stop and visit its undisputed king of fish, the Arctic Grayling. The magic was, that we seemed to be the only people around with that bright idea. Fishing this good is hard to come by back home, but it’s still alive and well in the Canadian North. Tag a friend who couldn’t pass up a juicy grayling stream and would have to stop and fish with you 🎣

Sometimes, the detour becomes the destination.

@tightloopsfly take the long road into Hyder, Alaska, for their first close encounter with a North American glacier.

As they continue north along the Cassiar Highway and into the Yukon, the landscape begins to change - coastal mountains give way to boreal forest, the summer sun stretches deep into the night, and crossing into Arctic drainages opens an entirely new world of fish.

And that means finally encountering one of the species they have traveled thousands of miles hoping to see: Arctic grayling!
